Education vision is just scratching the surface. The focus should be on quality rather than quantity.

^^ True, right now we have more than 15 universities across the country, and the number of primary and secondary schools are decreasing, you won't hear schools have being built but a fancy universities everywhere, I think they now number in 20s!

So what is needed is accountability, and quality as you said.

Saudi Arabia started a rail network that will connect major cities across its vast land, mainly for transporting passengers and cargo, the lines will total 2,500 kilometers when completed, and the lines are all kind zigzags, the job is nearly complete or partly completed, and the project cost is just over $3.4 billion, the zigzag lines makes it more expensive!

The Saudis have used German, Dutch, Japanese and Chinese contractors, and awarded each one on a different line that will connect cities.

Going to Africa, China funded 100% a railway network in Angola, the project would be called Luanda Railway, is about 424 km from the capital to another city, project cost was about $350 million, average cost to build one kilometer of railway is roughly under $1.2 million.

Somalia is lucky to have a great geographic location for its number seven shaped map, that makes it a lot easier to have a single/double line rail network that stretches from the capital, the majority of the lines would be straight line railways, crossing midpoints of inland to the far end of the country.

Mogadishu to Bosaso lines would be around 1,300 kilometers, but this line would interconnect to Burco-Berbera-Hargeisa when it passes through Garowe, then this line would go as far as Borama and to the border with Djibouti, this is mainly a connecting line that starts at Garowe and end at the border with Djibouti, and is about 890 kilometers from Garowe.

Mogadishu line through Beledweyn and terminates at Bosaso would be completely straight line, no mountains to dig or rocks to break, only thing would be having some bridges when the lines reach shabeele river areas in Balcad and other major locations.

So in total if we are going very extreme, total lines of railways kilometers would be 2,200, it is not a zigzag lines, major advantage of this is the whole lines are straight lines, if we add lines that would connect from Mogadishu to the border with Kenya at Dhoobley town, then we can add just over 600 kilometers of railway lines that will connect major cities such as Kismaayo, Baraawe, Merka and others, so in total we can have up to 3,000 kilometers of railway lines, not a single African country achieved this, but Somalia with its peace on the horizon, can achieve much more complex projects.

whats the point creating more universities? whats really needed is more technical schools. a developing country must have its education policy geared towards its labour market. there are too many graduates and no jobs.

The reason there are no jobs is because there are so many sectors that doesn't exist, industrial for graduate engineers, banking/postal/tourism for business & finance graduates, construction for civil engineers graduates, Technology for IT graduates, and so on, marka how are we supposed to help the young graduates when there is nothing out there.

So the level of education should be well balanced on what is out there as you mentioned, a real education policy is needed, plus projects that will equip the graduates with jobs.

All that of course will come when there is fully functioning public institutions that takes accounts for everything.

Ps: I am against the establishment of a university by the diaspora in every town or city they are from, they could easily fund a renewable energy project that will employ thousands of people, or bring five factories in the country that will produce and process food and fruits, again this will create more jobs, but us diaspora we don't see the bigger picture, obsessed with hebel baa jaamacad gobol hebel ka aas-aasey anaguna waa inaan aas-aasnaa jaamacad.

2025 Vision

  • Road-network - The entire current network of 22000 km of roads should be completely paved, and dual-carriage highways should be established to deal with the increase of motorists, which will number around 8 million by that time.
  • Enrollment rate - 100% - Compulsory education for all children, special attention to our daughters.
  • Electrification rate - 100%. The whole country must have a steady supply of electricity, no country can economically grow without reliable source of energy, we can do this through dams, solar power, wind-energy, etc.
  • Port infrastructure - It is vital that Somalia attracts billions in investment and transforms the existing deepsea-ports into the largest in East Africa.
  • Affirmative action for women & minorities - This program should be maintained for atleast 20 years to make sure there is a healthy balance in politics, military, education, healthcare, entertainment and other sectors in Somalia.
  • Female President - In 2020, a female only election should be initiated to usher in the country's first female president.
  • Oil-Industry - Somalia by that time should be the largest exporter of crude in Africa, 2 million barrels of Oil at a minimum.
  • Mining Industry - Somalia should have the largest mining projects for its Uranium, Gold and other valuable resources.
  • Fishing Industry - This economic sector has to be well-developed with trawlers and cooling-ships that will enable Somalia to have an annual profit of at least $3 billion USD.
  • Agriculture-Industry - The country has to be completely self-sufficient, and its crops should be once again the largest employers in East Africa.
  • Tourism Industry - At least 5 million tourists should be attracted to Somalia annually through world-wide branding, and advertisment campaigns worth $1 billion. The sector should generate at least five times that amount each year.
  • Tree-planting - 1 billion new trees planted across the country, and the most affected areas.
  • Technology sector - It should be regulated, but the government touch has to be invisible. The current companies such as Dahabshiil, Hormuud, etc, have to be billion dollar companies by then.
  • Aviation sector - Somali Airlines should be one of the most successful national carriers in Africa, only doing international flights. The domestic network should be covered by the other airlines.
  • Rail-network - A 500km rail-network connecting the major agricultural and grazing regions with the major ports.

    to be continued.

Waaryaa Nuune, this is not a vision brother. It is more like a wish list being submitted to father Santa Claus. Also Hargeisa airport is not getting new runways. Do you think it is Heathrow? It is getting a new parking space for president Silaanyo's regularly large and unnecessary entourage.

^ Stop being pessimistic, man. Africa is on the up and mending.

I was reading/seen earlier today an article in the Economist mag about big multinationals (Google, IBM, Microsoft etc) moving their African headquarters to Nairobi. Why, because the future is in Africa and Somalia is in Africa. Did I also tell you that we're mending and on the up too. Yes, we are. Okay, we might not be in the same league as Nairobi but we will get there. I am sure it will take us less time than it took them to get where they're today knowing Somalis being fond of getting things done bi surca. You know what we are like.

Some of those dreams will be realised soon enough, insha Allah.

I like your vision. Only visionaries succeed, not pessimists. It is visionaries and not pessimists that lead nations out of poverty and bad times

Last week, I was having a discussion about this with a Somali brother about this very same thing. He said all these things are possible and will occur but added one surprising but disappointing comment: This generation will not see the finished product.

What do you all think about this? Personally, I wouldn't mind this. It's more exciting and fun to witness your country being built in front of your very eyes and being involved in this very important process than actually enjoying the fruits of our labor. Let our kids and grand kids enjoy it :D
