Turkish Ambassador: There is as much you [Somalis] can do for us, as we can do for you.

Recommended Posts

For some reason my first thread does not show hence why I created another.

The Turkish ambassador to the U.S candidly explains the importance of strategic alliances and networks. He suggests that Somalis are able to help Turkey as much as Turkey is able to help Somalis. If we think "big", he says, then we can find many things to help them (and vice versa) and there is no "force" that can stop us. However for this to happen, we need to first trust eachother. He also emphasises and urged the point that the Somali diaspora represents the "elite" (most educated, affluent, knowledgeable, influential portion) of the Somali people.

Interesting video indeed and it highlights the sheer importance and need for the Somali diaspora to be networking and building bridges with other communities and countries.

Start @ 15.38min. The video does make me cringe at points, but that is to be expected that our trademark lol.

The Turks did, hence he said 'Turkish allies' not Turkey.

What can Somalis do for Turkey though?

1 - A 10-12 million people market in Somalia, and indirectly a 20+ million people market that constitutes the Somali Nation.

a) As Somali wealth increases, the market will become more lucrative. Its a sizable population that within a generation could be uplifted to a middle-income country, and with the exploitation of natural resources, far beyond that.

2 - As a people. Somalis have a significant foothold in various African markets, and the growing bilingual Somalis that know Turkish could act as intermediaries for Turkish companies and entrepreneurs.

3 - A million+ Somalis in the diaspora potentially flying Turkish Airlines and buying Turkish products.

a) Somalis are globe-trekkers, and they go to places where Somali airline companies do not have a license to fly, hence Turkish Airlines would be the right alternative.

b) A million+ people with a significant spending power and who are pro-Turkey is always a bonus for any Turkish company or upstart entrepreneur.

4 - Turkey has a large meat-eating population, who are majoritely muslim that want their products Halaal.

a) We are the largest exporters of live-animals in the world, and importing directly from a country like Somalia is a natural choice.

b) Somali agriculture has many exotic commodities the Turks don't grow, which would enrich their cuisine.

5 - The strategic location of Somalia is something every analyst is very much aware off, and certainly Turkey hasn't failed to notice this. There are many benefits to having a close relationship with a stable Somalia.

a) Somali Ports when renovated and expanded will draw in thousands of ships from around the world, many of them could be Turkish flagged or Turkish build, we did have the largest merchant fleet of the OIC in prewar times afterall.

b) Somalia sits on the busiest shipping lanes in the world connecting all major economies. The country will exert transit fees as it did in pre-war times which will be worth billions, but a country like Turkey could be given free passage

c) A close relationship could be developed between the Somali military and that of Turkey's. It would curb Iran's influence in the region, a regional rival of Turkey.

6 - Natural resources, plenty of that in Somalia and Turkey as a rising economy needs alot of it.

a) Oil - Somalia is estimated to have between 19 to 110 billion barrels of oil, this would put it in the Global Top 20, either way.

b) Uranium - Turkey is building a nuclear-energy sector, a country like Somalia with one of the largest reserves of Uranium could be a supplier.

c) Marine resources - With the longest coastline in Africa, Somalia is rich with marine life, and since Turkey has a well-developed Aquaculture both in catching and selling in restaurants, getting licenses in Somalia, or importing from the country would sustain that culture without harming their own fish-stocks.

d) Gold, Precious Stones - Plenty of Turkish jewelries and manufacturers that would be interested in that.

7 - The Somali vote, be it in the UN, or any other world-organisation is always beneficial in case they want push for a policy. No matter the current state of Somalia, a vote is a vote.

Well said, Chimera. Turkey also has a large construction sector, there's potential for cooperation there. I really appreciate this guy for raising the bar in this dialogue.

At least he's not a hypocrite or double faced like the west, we need you as much as you need us, it sounds to me the start of an honest and good mutual relationship.

The west go to Africa with handouts and the bible and took the resources and even human slaves.

To add my two cents -Turkey also wants a major foothold in the Sub Saharan Africa. it sees Somalia as it's hub into that lucrative market and Somalis being Dominant in that region in terms of business links, they see a route to take their products to market that is quick, well established and aggressive which they can build on.

That to them is probably the biggest and most lucrative reason for developing this strategic alliance with somalis.

Definitely, if insha-allah everything goes well, then Somalia in the next two decades will be initiating some of Africa's largest construction projects. If you look at pre-war Somalia there were multiple records held by the country in terms of infrastructure, and I believe we will follow in that path, and go beyond it once the natural resources are mined/drilled and exported.

You're looking at tens of billions worth of infrastructure contracts, not just in reconstruction but in ambitious new projects. The Turks have a well-developed construction sector, and they are already busy in Somalia.

There has to be a vision for everything, lets say a vision for every project that would be developed, example as in Vision for Transport that would be achieved by the year 2025, we can say Transport 2025, the list for this project would include:

- Re-establishment of Somali Airlines, going green for low emission planes, that means buying or leasing newly built planes that are ONLY within 5 years old, by doing this, you are saving HUGE amount on fuel consumption, at the end of the project, the planes used by Somalia Airlines would number 150 aircraft.

The airline would be a major player in Somalia, flying to every region in the country, and internationally, adding multiple destinations in every year would bring the destinations that the airline flies to every continent around the world.

This project when completed can create up to 50,000 thousand jobs

- Rail Network System, pretty much easy, is a project that can take about 5-8 years to build, maximum 10 years to connect the whole Somalia, this would be achieved before 2025 Transport Vision, if the project gets started in two years time.

This project when completed would create half a million jobs, and 100,000 jobs during the construction period.

- A healthcare system, major hospitals and medical clinics in ever city and town, this project would create one million jobs when completed by 2025, it is a huge project.

I can list more projects, but just summarizing, the unemployment rate would be as low as 3% by 2025 when we add agriculture projects, construction projects, marine projects, road transport project and other projects, the unemployment figure would be less than 1%, even the West would be jealous of this achievement, amazing that Somalia would seek foreign workers to work in the country, amazing.

One thing to everyone, don't lose hope for Somalia, it can and will get better in time, when that time comes, contribute and participate, invest, give advise and share you knowledge.

Chimera, please create a thread that we can share our vision for Somalia, where we can list everything, you are good at this.
