Finding Your Roots

Recommended Posts

I have been watching this show for while. The premise of the show is exactly what title says, looking for ancestral roots of the guests who are mainly celebrities. The guests ancestry is traced through documents and dna testing. Since we don't have written history and stories about ancestors are not reliable to say least, tracing our individual ancestors through dna testing is only the option.

All this led me to wonder, if we were to do dna testing on Solers, how many of us will have common ancestor at any given time in history. Mind Somalis have extensively intermarried and obviously continue to do so. And the stories of Arab Shiekhs coming to Somalia seems shaky at best. Is there common Somali ancestor and are today's tribes really blood related or mere political construct that was established in the past but now accepted as blood kinship?

We don't need DNA. This is purely why abtirsi was necessary in the first place, the one good reason qabiil haddii lagu dhaqmaayo loogu tala galay. Dadkaan Reer Galbeedka ah qoyskooda iyo meelahee kasoo jeedaan ayee jareen xiroorkooda waa hore, so this was inevitable to them. Now DNA ayee wax ka raadinayaan markee wareereen.

^But among populations that are related, there is distinct identifiers that connect people with same ancestral roots with degree of certainty. For examples, males that originated from one common ancestor will distinct chromosome or gene that is unchanged through time. The same is true for women.

Since our society is patriarchal, can we really say all males that claimed to be from same tribe really do have one common male ancestor?

I'm up for it, who is ready to prick me, or swab my cheeks?! or do whatever science juju that comes with it.

^We are hoping there won't be any Aryans among us but the in words of Seinfeld not that there's anything with being Aryan.

Will Somalia's tribal structure stand up to the scrutiny of DNA testing? Are Xiin and Duke really from the dude or is NGONGE related to the Imam? interesting questions to be asked.

Blessed

I was watching Lilonel Richie trace his ancester a few weeks ago, it's very interesting. I wish we were a record keeping sort of people. Not so bothered about the qabiil but would love get a glimps of what life was like from my great, great ayeeyoyin and awoowo. The ancestary only looks at the mens side, whilst I know both parents awooyaal to their qabiil. Ayeeyoyinka, I could only go as far back as hooyos ayeeyo. :(

^In the case of our people, there's case to be made or would be an insult to the danyeer?

RaMpAgE...pretty?

Blessed and Malika...There's an episode on Maggie Gyllenhaal (minute 45 on). Apparently, her maternal ancestor dates back many many centuries-part of four sisters that millions of European Jews can trace ancestry to.

Somalis don't need that even though its interesting if u want to know you're ancestors 4000 years ago and who u are related to and stuff beyond that. But people who don't know their history and genealogy ayaa hawlaha u bahaan like African Americans they want to know where they hail from in Africa originally.
