Somalia’s Season of Khayr

Despite periodic suicide bombings in Mogadishu, Somalia is on track to achieve political milestones as well as security ones to end the transition period and fully restore her statehood. The constitution-making process is nearing completion as delegates are selected from every community, represented by the 4.5 political workaround. Come May, 850-strong delegates will congregate in the historic building of Somalia’s once prestigious Police Training School at the mouth of Indian Ocean breeze in Mogadishu to review and vote for the constitution. It is expected that the new constitution will be adopted, marking a significant political milestone to complete the transition.

 

In Puntland, 480 delegates from regions various stakeholders have just concluded a historic 4 day convention to pass Puntland’s regional constitution. It marked a new beginning for the region where a new political system is adopted, transitioning from the old ways of forming regional parliament. This event showcased Puntland’s maturity as a state in its capacity to undertake very significant political event and succeed in a safe and timely fashion. TFG delegates flew from Mogadishu to witness the process as it unfolded.

 

A 12-member committee comprising Somaliland, Puntland and TFG are expected to meet in London in a preliminary, preparatory meeting to discuss outstanding political issues surrounding Somaliland’s separatist stance. This is significant because after twenty years, Somaliland prudently chose to engage with other Somalis to begin reconciling its difference with other stakeholders.

 

Turkey is planning to hold important meeting where Somalia’s political and civic leaderships are invited. International agencies that involve in Somalia and donor countries are also invited to contribute financially for Somalia’s recovery and reconstruction process.

 

TFG leadership is on track to achieve political and security milestones to mark the end of transitional status. With the notable exception of politically disgruntled activists on VOA and BBC airwaves and Alshabaab security threat, things are looking bright for Somalia indeed.

It is interesting that the secessionists brothers are now boycotting the very negotiations they were celebrating yesterday. Remember Siilaanyo appointed his negotiation team first before Sharif

I see alot of Puntland this and Puntland that where it should be about Somalia. Unfortunate for Somalia that they have to deal with phony nationalist who shamelesslly try to wrap their tribal agenda around the Somali flag and issues of National interest.

Season of Khayr indeed, many Somalis at home and abroad are beginning to see the bigger picture, and slowly but surely the indigineous superstructure that is the Somali State is rising like a Phoenix. Mogadishu is making a big comeback, the Pearl of the Indian Ocean is one large construction zone, Pro-Somali countries like Turkey, Qatar and the UAE are making sure everything is on track, and that the interests of Somalis can't be twisted and manipulated to appease Somalia's neighbours, the darlings of the West. That time has changed, world power is shifting, and with it a real chance for an honest reconciliation process.

 

In the political landscape, there are things happening that most people would not have foreseen only two years ago. A Somali politician like Farmaajo mobilised nationalist fervor amongst different clans. The entrance of educated Somalis on the political scene. Somaliland being interested in talks (conditions or not, it's a precedent). The entrance of the Turks whose global clout has done miracles for the situation in Somalia on a international level. The transition will end in August, and with it the chance of fresh faces in Somali politics, many of which are very promising. Amongst the Islamists, cracks are starting to appear and I believe these will grow larger in the coming year, so there is a real chance there.

 

In the economic and social sectors, history was made when an Oil Rig began drilling in Puntland's Dharoor Valley, in the capital of Somalia, Mogadishu, the largest Children's hospital is being constructed, a large airport expansion is occuring and everywhere you look there is construction in the city. Mogadishu is the engine of the Somali World, if it does well, we all do well!

 

Its vital that special attention is given to lifting the arms-embargo, this resolution is outdated, for there is a recognised Somali government in place that has legitimacy amongst the citizens of the capital, and large swathes of the country. For Somalia to enjoy massive billion dollar plus investments, security has to be paramount and we can achieve this with a well-equipped Somali Armed Forces, funded with the revenues from the Ports, Airports and taxation. Therefore in 2013 the Somali Army has to be supplied with tanks of their own, and recruits should be send to Turkey for naval training. In 2014 and 15, an air component should be steadily attached to the military.

 

The above is extremely important to maintaining the gains made, and go beyond that.
