Xaaji Xunjuf Posted June 29, 2012 IN PICTURES: Hundreds in Mogadishu rally in support of Somaliland deal – new Friday talks MOGADISHU — Hundreds of people on Friday staged a rally in Mogadishu in support of Thursday’s landmark agreement between the leaders of Somalia and Somaliland in the United Arab Emirates. The demonstrators gathered in a stadium in the district of Abdulaziz where they were addressed by Somali officials including the commander of the armed forces, General Abdulkadir S. Dini, the police commissioner, General Sharif S. Una-Maye and the mayor of Mogadishu, Mr. Mohamud A. Nur “Tarzan” as well as others. They waved flags and sang patriotic songs in a rare show of support for the ongoing negotiations between Hargeisa and Mogadishu. The mayor welcomed the crowd’s push and said the rally was a symbol of love and unity between the two Somali people. His words were reechoed by Mr. Mohamud Malin Nur, the director-general of Ministry of defense. The protesters were joined by traditional leaders outside the stadium who also expressed optimism in a new relationship between Somalia and Somaliland. The traditional elders said they came out in solidarity of their northern brothers and hoped they will enter a new chapter of friendship, cooperation and mutual respect. Hosted in Dubai by the government of United Arab Emirates, Thursday’s agreement paves the way for substantive talks between the two Somali neighbours. The international community has pledged its full support for the initiative which all began in February during the London conference. The two agreed to the continuation of the formal dialogue that began in Britain last week and the next phase will bring two committees to the negotiation table in order to clarify their relationship. Friday Talks According to reports in Dubai Somaliland President Ahmed Mohamed Silanyo and Somalia’s President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed have went into talks Friday to salvage their two-decade broken relationship for the second time as many days. A source close to Mr. Ahmed said the sides have agreed to strengthen their bilateral relations and pledged to increase discussions. The new deal was reached after talks lasted several hours behind closed doors. The report further disclosed that the two presidents have agreed to seek international experts on legal, economic and security matters. They added the two leaders have embraced each others. Carafaat Posted June 29, 2012 Somalia-Somaliland proposed talks a shot in arm for anti-piracy efforts Gulf Today Friday, June 29, 2012 The second day of the UAE Counter Piracy conference in Dubai witnessed a historic development as the presidents of Somalia and Somaliland agreed to start a dialogue under an agreed framework that is expected to positively affect the fight against maritime piracy. President of Somalia’s Transitional Federal Government Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and President of the Republic of Somaliland Ahmed Mahamoud Silanyo later released a joint statement in the presence of UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Mohammed Gargash. Presidents of the two nations met for the first time during the past 21 years and agreed to continue the dialogue to clarify the relationship between the two sides. Commenting on the development, Silanyo expressed confidence that the co-operation would contribute positively to the fight against maritime piracy as well as terrorism, and will bring peace to the region. He also expressed the hope that this step would lead to formal acceptation of Somaliland as an independent nation by Somalia, as well as by the international community. Renewed hope “We have been fighting against terrorism and maritime piracy along with the international community. Hope we will get recognition by them,” he added. Foreign Minister of Somaliland Mohammed Omar said the meeting of the presidents of the two nations — the first since 1991 — was a positive sign. He thanked the UAE government for hosting this meeting and expressed hope for greater co-operation between the two countries in the fight against maritime piracy, terrorism, besides regional security issues. He clarified that the issue of reunification of the two countries would never be part of the dialogue, as Somaliland was an independent nation for more than two decades. “I take it as a positive gesture from Somalia. They have not recognised us as an independent nation so far. Since they have agreed to start a dialogue with us, it shows that they are ready to listen to us,” he said. Ambassador of Somalia to the UAE Abdulkadir Sheikhey Al Hatimi also termed it a historic meeting and said that it is bound to bring positive changes. “The two presidents met each other face-to-face and shook hands, while agreeing to start a dialogue. “It is a historic development in our relations,” he added.
