Liibaan Posted April 2, 2012 NUSOJ Calls On Somaliland Authorities to Release The Detained Las Anod Journalists Mogadishu — The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) has today made an urgent appeal to the Somaliland Authorities to release TV journalist held by the police in Las Anod District of Sool Region in northern Somalia. According to information from Las Anod, Ahmed Ali Farah,a reporter with Somali 24 TV, was arrested on Saturday, 31 March 2012 at around 12:00 pm local time. Farah was accused of being among the team of journalists who were reporting from Taleex Conference, which culminated in the announcement of the new Khatumo State. Abdiweli Hassan Gooni, NUSOJ Puntland Coordinator has called on Somaliland authorities to immediate release Farah, who is also stringer for Radio Daljir. Responding to this development, NUSOJ Secretary General Omar Faruk Osman said the union was concerned that the Somaliland authorities had chosen to arrest the journalist for doing his work. "It is not the journalist who organized the conference nor did he proclaim the new state. The jailed journalist Ahmed Ali Farah has been an active figure in the media and worked for Somali media including, Radio’s Websites, Televisions and also he worked for local radio known as Radio Laasccaanood before it was closed by Somaliland Authority in the region. After the occupation of Sool region by Somaliland Mr. Ahmed has been working in Puntland specially Garowe town for local media including the famous radio known as Daljir, Somalichnal TV, ETN and other organizations, during the past months Ahmed has been staying in Taleh, a district in Sool region working there for Somali speaking TV channel known as Royal TV. Mr. Ahmed went to Lasanod to visit his family two days ago, Ahmed has been arrested by Somaliland police force under the order of the governor of Sool region whose name is Mohamed Mohamuud Jeniyare. Attempts are going to free Ahmed Ali Farah who is now in the central prison of Lasanod The arrest of Ahmed is one of human rights violations as well as freedom of Speech against journalists in Sool region since Somaliland’s occupation of Lasanod in 2007. Somaliland Police arrested Ahmed Ali Farah who reports for the privately owned Royal Television in the region on Saturday noon, 31 March, 2012 in the town of Las-Anod, the regional capital of Sool region, local journaliststold NUSOJ. Mr. Farah was imprisoned the orders of the governor of Sool region, Mohamed Mohamuud Jeniyare and is currently held at the Las-Anod central Prison, according to journalists who spoke with NUSOJ. The journalist has been recently reporting from in Taleh district of the Sool region, where he was based. Taleeh district is where representatives from Sool, Sanaag and Cayn regions announced a regional independent state recently, which infuriated Somaliland authorities and resulted in mass arrests and the unrest that followed. His arrest might be linked to his recent reports from the region. The Somaliland authorities is yet to comment on the arrest of the journalist. The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) calls for the Somaliland authorities to release the journalist immediately. This latest arrest shows the deteriorating press freedom and freedom of expression levels in those regions and how journalists are risking their lives to report. “We calls for the Somaliland authorities to give the journalist’s freedom back or bring him before a fair court,” Mohamed Ibrahim, NUSOJ Secretary General said, “We urge Somaliland administration to respect the freedom of expression in the regions under their control and allow journalists and media stations to exercise the given freedoms.” In late February, the Somaliland police have seriously beaten Mohamed Abdirahman Ismail in the jail and is currently receiving treatment and Mohamed Abdi Boosh who was beaten on the head inside the jail, he is traveling to Djibouti for treatment. Doha Center for Media Freedom provided assistance for treatment to both journalists on the request of the National Union of Somali Journalists. In Somaliland the violating media rights and targeting the freedom of journalists’ work are becoming continuously and it is impossible that the international community should not speak out such a ruthless attack on the independent media and journalists. “We are calling for Somalilnd to stop the arrest of the journalists and to respect the rights of Media, because the media has right to cover any news exist in the region, we are also calling for the international community and human rights watch to file the attacks against media in Somalind.” The general secretary of SOMJA Mohamed Ali Abdi (Royter) said. Liibaan Posted April 7, 2012 The Committee to Protect Journalists Two Journalists Detained Without Charge In North Somalia New York, April 6, 2012 --Authorities in Somaliland must immediately release two journalists who have been detained without charge for days in apparent violation of regional law, the Committee to Protect Journalists said today. Somaliland authorities arrested Ahmed Ali Farah, a reporter for Royal TV, in the northwest town of Las Anod, in the Sool region, on March 31, according to news reports. Local journalists told CPJ that Governor Mohamed Mohamud had ordered the arrest and said that Farah was being held in Central Las Anod Prison. Three days later, Abdisaman Isse, a reporter for Universal TV, was arrested while visiting Farah in prison, news reports said. Somaliland law forbids detainees from being held without charge for more than 48 hours. Local journalists said authorities had not disclosed reasons for the journalists' detention. Local journalists told CPJ they suspected Farah and Isse were arrested for their coverage of the Sool region. The two journalists had recently covered a conference in the town of Taleh that culminated in the announcement of a new independent region, Khatumo State, the journalists told CPJ, adding that they feared the arrests of other journalists who had covered the Taleh conference. "Authorities are holding Ahmed Ali Farah and Abdisaman Isse without explanation, in violation of the law, and in apparent reprisal for political coverage deemed unfavorable," said CPJ East Africa Consultant Tom Rhodes. "The journalists should be released immediately." Control of the Sool region has been in dispute between the semiautonomous regions of Somaliland and Puntland for two decades. Somaliland authorities have repeatedly detained journalists this year in what appears to be an attempt to silence any reporting of instability in the region, according to CPJ research.
