We shouldn't call them " ... evil bearded men ...", but rather try and see why they think that way. Perhaps they are not aware that most university's have a prayer room, and an Islamic society. Speaking from experience university life only enhanced my relationship with Allah as i met amazing sisters who shared the same goal of educating themselves to improve society for the sake of Allah. maybe they only hear the negative stories of those who became misguided, but if the parents give their kids a good tarbeya,then insha'Allah they should have nothing to fear as they (the parents) should simply place their trust in Allah,as it's Allah alone who guides us.

I'm as old school as ancient Babylon and question the whole purpose and importance of higher education, as soon as the girl finishes high school she should attend cookery classes. At the end of the day, she will spend most her time in kitchen so she might as well learn how to cook a wacky food.

On serious note though women are very important backbone of our community, the days when we sent boys to school and left girls to deal with the household duties are over. That very primitive, backward custom is regressive and we should be done with it for good. When you carefully analyse the role of women in the developed world, you come to know that how indispensible they are. Where would NHS be without the women nurses/midwives/doctors? Who would teach our children in schools and in colleges without them? What about all back office jobs? They are simply a force to be reckoned with. The only thing for us is where the Somali proverb goes "Sidee xeero lagu xagtaa ilkana u nabad galaan".
