kingofkings Posted March 23, 2012 It would be unkind to the path of peace and development that Somalia is walking on today if we were to ignore the man who made it possible. The modern history of Somalia post-2000 would paint much worse image if Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed did not sacrifice his last years to making Somalia a respectable nation. The history of Somalia’s late president goes back over half a century in service of his country. Abdullahi Yusuf joined the military at the age of 23, volunteering for a young Somali military that was due to take over control of the nation in just a few short years following the end of the UN Trusteeship of the 1950s. Yusuf’s first great call to duty came in 1964 when the young Somali Republic went to war with neighboring Ethiopia to regain control of its lost territories in what is now the Somali Region of Ethiopia. Following the conflict, which ended in stalemate, he received a medal for bravery. Upon completion of his wartime duties, he was sent to the Soviet Union to serve as a military attaché to Moscow. In 1969, Somalia’s president Abdirashid Sharmarke was assassinated, leading to a power vacuum that was filled by Marxist opportunists. Yusuf didn’t support the timely coup, and for that he was sentenced to six years in prison. Two years ahead of Somalia’s 1977 war with Ethiopia, Yusuf was released from prison, and regained his rank in the military to lead a Somali National Army division into the southern front against Ethiopia. After the war, ending in another stalemate, Yusuf was given a second medal for bravery, but would retain his title of colonel. Fed up with dictator Siad Barre’s rule and ineffectiveness in the war with Ethiopia, Yusuf and a group of young army officers attempted a coup in 1978 to restore the democracy Somalia had before Barre’s 1969 coup. The plot failed when a small group of Yusuf’s comrades led a premature attack on the president’s compound in the capital Mogadishu. The officers were caught or killed following the botched coup, and Barre went the additional length of rounding up more officers associated with the event and carried out a full purge of suspected elements. The following year, Barre unleashed the military on Yusuf’s clan, killing 2,000 civilians in central Somalia in the ensuing massacres that went on between May and June of 1979. This was the boiling point for Yusuf, and led to the creation of the Somali Salvation Democratic Front (SSDF), an organization dedicated to restoring Somalia’s pre-Marxist democracy. The SSDF led various assaults on Barre’s forces along the border, using radio communication to coordinate support inside Somalia. This went on for years, with Yusuf high up in the leadership, until 1985 when he was imprisoned for refusing nearby Ethiopian soldiers to hoist their flag on the sovereign territory of the Somali Republic. Yusuf would remain imprisoned until the fall of Ethiopian dictator Haile Mariam Mengistu’s Derg regime in 1990. He returned to Somalia in 1992 to lead a triumphant liberation of the northeastern regions against Al-Itihad, a designated terrorist organization made up of many of today’s high-ranking Al-Shabaab figureheads that once occupied all of the provinces that make up today’s Puntland State. He would remain a leading man in the region, working feverishly to organize SSDF militias into proper security forces, culminating in the August 1998 declaration of Puntland State of Somalia, the first semi-autonomous state within Somalia that espoused the vision of a united and strong Somali republic. Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed was declared the first president of the state. In 2000, a cabal of Somali warlords and drug traffickers announced the formation of the Transitional National Government (TNG) in Arta, Djibouti, simultaneously coordinating with anti-Yusuf opposition in Puntland to balance elections in their favor. Yusuf stepped down peacefully after an election loss in 2001 to TNG puppet Jama Ali Jama. After months of carefully watching the growing criminal conspiracy in his home region, Yusuf stepped up once again to correct the wrongs in his midst. He took up arms in 2002 and overthrow Jama Ali Jama. But Yusuf wasn’t in it for himself, he wanted to organize the people of Puntland and convince them to help form a working Somali government alongside their countrymen in the remainder of the nation. In 2004, Yusuf spearheaded the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) alongside Somali politicians and intellectuals from around the nation, and from within the diaspora. This regime was hailed as a milestone by Somali and non-Somali observers, and as a genuine opportunity for Somalia’s revival. A few months later and this new government was already operating fully inside Somalia, from the temporary seat of government in the town of Jowhar, later moving to Baidoa. Halfway through his TFG presidency in 2006, another roadblock reared its head. This time, the same terrorists who occupied Puntland in 1992 were now in full control of the Somali capital Mogadishu, looking to seek revenge against Yusuf for ousting them from his home region. At the closing of 2006, the militants attempted to seize Baidoa but were repelled, and within just two months they were completely cleansed from Somalia’s major cities, just as they were from Puntland in the early 1990s. By early 2007, the young TFG had its base in Mogadishu and was fully running the show, giving a broken Somali nation the first ray of hope in nearly twenty years. Along the way, roadblocks came in and out, but were crushed every time they attempted to obstruct progress. Finally, at the end of 2008 Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, President and Hero of the Somali Republic many times over, stepped down and went into retirement. Over the years, the former president’s health deteriorated in front of our eyes, only for us to lose him in a long-standing battle against pneumonia. May Allah have mercy on Somalia’s former president. He has served his nation with dignity, and we will defend his legacy and continue to build on his successes.
