Al shabaab massacre in Mogadishu wipes out a whole family

Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it had fired more than a dozen mortars at the heavily-fortified presidential compound.

 

The attack was the second in a week and will raise doubts about claims by the government and African Union troops that it has now cleared the capital of militants.

 

Last week, a suicide bomber dressed in army uniform blew himself up in a restaurant opposite the presidential palace, killing six people.

 

The latest attack involved the use of short-range mortars but it is not clear where they were fired from. Villa Somalia, as the presidential compound is known, is normally beyond the range of mortars launched from outside the capital, suggesting the attack was launched from within.

 

Al Shabaab claimed that it had killed five AU, Ugandan soldiers and 11 government troops but the AU insisted only civilians were killed.
