Maaddeey Posted March 19, 2012 Mortar attacks kill several in Somali capital: AU mission English.news.cn 2012-03-19 18:17:22 [RSS] [Feedback] [Print] [Copy URL] [More] MOGADISHU, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Mortar attacks on the presidential palace in the Somali capital Mogadishu have left several people dead, the African Union mission in Somalia (AMISOM) disclosed on Monday. The Horn of Africa country's rebel Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the overnight attacks, which also hit a refugee camp close to the presidential compound. The group has stepped up attacks recently apparently in a show of continued presence in the war-battered capital, amid joint military pressure from the government forces, AMISOM and the Kenyan army fighting in the south of the country since October 2011. Al-Shabaab was largely driven out of the Somali capital in August 2011 and suffered another major offensive from the government and AMISOM forces this year, prompting a backlash from the Al-Qaida linked group. The presidential palace has been targeted for a second time this year by Al-Shabaab scrambling for survival.

Mario B Posted March 19, 2012 19 March 2012 Somali refugees killed by Mogadishu mortars About six people have been killed in Somalia after mortars landed on a refugee camp near the presidential palace in Mogadishu, officials say. A family of four were among those killed, a witness told the AFP news agency. Islamist group al-Shabab said it had fired more than a dozen mortars. The al-Qaeda-linked group controls many southern areas but is under attack from Ethiopia, Kenya and was forced out of Mogadishu last year. "A father, mother and two of their children have all died after a mortar shell smashed into their hut, and another round killed two other civilians," Abdiwahid Mohamed told AFP. Paddy Ankunda, a spokesman for the African Union force supporting the UN-backed government, told Reuters news agency that about six civilians had been killed but no mortars had landed in the presidential palace. The government only controls the capital but last week started its first advance beyond the city limits. The country has been racked by fighting since its last effective national government was toppled 21 years ago. More on This Story BBC From other news sites Yahoo!
