Nonsense. Puntland has an army, police force and even coast guard. It has institutions it build from scratch, it has even brought investment to exploit it's natural resource without a penny from a central government or any other Somali regions clans. Yet it wants to be part of a Federal Somalia it recognizes the national government and has even hosted Somalia's first national games, Somali women conference and the political consultative conference.

 

Some here who always hated it, point to its State flag, it's Police, it's army as a problem. They would like it to be poor and on it's knees.

As for printing the money, it's another gap that a central government ought to fill but can not. I don't agree with this but to compare Puntland to the warlord of Mogadishu is yet another example of hateful envy.

 

Puntland State of Somalia is a reality, if you like it or not it's here to stay by the grace of Allah.

My understanding is that the new money is not new currency. It's still the same old Somali Shilling but in large denominations. To suggest PL is making its own money, thus preparing to secede is just misleading.

 

This is a bad move by PL admin and a terrible idea for the businesses. I am afraid many businesses will lose their business because of the dollar value going down. Expect the dollar value to plunge and the old shilling bills to disappear from the market. Not good at all. Whoever is making this policy didn't think through the ramifications to the local market and business values.

The Puntland Ministry of Finance announced this week that the federal state will begin distributing the new Somali Shilling to local markets. This comes on the heel of state demands that accounting only be done using the Somali Shilling, amidst the popularity of the American dollar in local markets.

 

In the port city of Bosaso, the third-largest in Somalia and the commercial capital of Puntland, the Somali Shilling is at its greatest strength in a decade, exchanging now at 19,000 to the dollar. The aim of the Puntland administration is to foster the growing strength of the Somali Shilling by reintroducing it to local markets and keeping a steady supply of local currency for trade. At the moment, there is a near-absence of the Somali Shilling in Bosaso’s markets.

 

The state-run Bank of Puntland is not tasked with managing currencies, its only role will be to produce and distribute the currency to the public in order to keep its activity afloat. The new currency, to be introduced soon, will replace the weak former currency that was minted by the current Speaker of Parliament Sharif Sheikh Hassan in 2009 in Sudan. The old currency fell and created opposition across the region.

 

The new Somali Shilling is the product of the recently-reopened Central Bank of Somalia and was agreed upon by both Puntland and the Transitional Federal Government. It will be vastly different from the old currency and will come in bills of 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, and 50,000, and is expected to bring about a historic change in local economies. Systems are being put in place to protect and develop this currency and avoid the mistakes of years previous.

I don't blame Faroole on this,for the past three months the dollar lost almost 50% of its value against Somali Shilling, where as the commodity prices go up on daily basis.

No one understands why the sudden appreciation of Somali shilling, this is being decided by an illiterate Sariflayaal in Mogadishu adn everything became standstill in puntland, supplier don't want to sell their goods coz they don't how much to sell any more,goods are not coming out of the port any more coz people don;t want to pay taxes at the old rate which is double or triple now.

 

Printing a new currencies is all Faroole can think of now. Don't blame him.
