Archdemos Posted February 28, 2012 Very interesting findings of this research on Somali bananas. This is especially poignant as Ethiopia just yesterday announced the first export to Saudi of its new crash crop. From these findings it seems the Somali banana is of a superior quality. Does anyone know if its exported at all. Link: www.banana2008.com/cms/posters/baars.pdf
Archdemos Posted February 28, 2012 Another very interesting report from SOMALI AGRICULTURAL TECHNICAL GROUP www.satg.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/.../SATG_Strategy_2011.pdf
Somalia Posted February 28, 2012 No, they are not exported. Shalambot as it is called, is a huge area of plantations owned by the Italians and then by the government. In the civil war it was fought over by two groups, it's highly profitable so after Al-Shabaab leaves those areas they will be contested.

Archdemos Posted February 28, 2012 I recently read a shocking statistic from the FAO that only 11% of Somalia's arable land is currently cultivated. Surely Somalia should benefit and be eligible for EU–ACP agreements on tariffs and market entry.
Archdemos Posted February 28, 2012 I suppose the encouraging thing from that study is the way the Somali banana excelled in the blind tests. Its a new world now and the trade should actively target the very profitable Fair Trade segment of the market
