UK wants Somali Oil

Recommended Posts

Aah, my easily excitable little 'nomads'....

If there was confirmed oil anywhere in the former Somalia (and especially in those quantities) don't you think 'Uncle Sam' would have landed 50,000 Marines under some pretext at the prodding of the big American oil majors to clear up the little 'Somalia problem'? Wouldn't the Chinese send 20,000 workers in a 'friendship' gesture to build roads and ports? Look around the continent i.e. Angola, Nigeria, South Sudan... This is what occurs when there's verifiable 'black gold' under the sands regardless of the political insecurity present in the region.

And it's definitely not happening in our neck of the woods.

These Guardian articles are just rehashed essays from the old Los Angeles Times article of 1993 when 'Restore Hope' was launched. Except, that article pointed to Somaliland as the most promising region. I can easily post the article if some are doubtful.

However, the reality remains no major oil company has shown interest in the former Somalia regardless of whether approached by Somaliland, Puntland, the TFG, etc.

So let's not count the chickens before they're hatched. If Africa Oil strikes oil in the next 6 months as some here on these Boards have predicted, it will be a game changer for the whole region. Then exploration will explode across the whole Horn. But until that happens, it's all wishes in a cold Western winter...

and some people on here said there would be no benefit to the people in Somalia

"The most important part of the 'whole story,' perhaps, is that even if Conoco finds oil in significant amounts, there will have to be additional steps and much more investment before Somalia can benefit. The first prerequisite will be that Somalia achieve internal peace. [President of Conoco Somalia Raymond] Marchand explains to [somali government] officials that if there is no peace, then neither Conoco nor anyone else will be able to get the oil out. A pipeline, pumping station and terminal would cost in the neighborhood of UDS 500 to 800 million..."

And we have to payback the loan required to build the pipeline etc, our profits are in the 10%-15% range if best.

They're welcome to it if they can pay fair market value. But knowing Somalis' penchant for endless conspiracy theories and paranoid suspicions of others, this story will probably be blown out of all proportions.

It is worthwhile to keep a perspective: not a single millimeter of oil has been extracted anywhere in Somalia and not a cent of oil revenue has flown into any Somali coffers.

The EEZ falls under jurisdiction of the Federal Government, I think Puntland will still be making enough dough from it's land installations but as far as the "continental shelf" is concerned that is the job of Mogadishu Gov.

Mario, your kidding yourself. According to Puntland's constitution article 6, section 4.

Dhulka Puntland waxaa ku dhan hawada sare, berriga iyo dhulka hoostiisa, jiidda dhaqaalaha ee badda oo dhan 200 maylka badda ah oo ka bilawda halka uu ku dhammaado hirka ugu dambeeya, waxaana mas’uul ka ah Dawladda.

Puntland sharci ba ka jiro, iska hadal ma aha, Plus that constitution was harmonized with the federal constitution just recently at the garowe II so you cant argue it is contradictory with the national one. Niyahow runta ka carar weliga lakin Puntland tashataye iyo manta ayaad arkaysa guulo wa-weyn uu soo hoyanayso

If Puntland wrote the "federal constitution" then it aint Federal Constitution, simple as that....one region cannot speak for everybody else.

P.s Somalia hasn't got constitution yet, unless you're refering to pre 1991 one, and that was definately not written by "PL".
