As Somaliland takes a slide into the unknown, many questions come to the mind of those of us who advocated and still believe in the legitimacy of the Somaliland cause and have a great faith in the ingenuity and wisdom of the people of Somaliland.

 

Among the questions that race through the mind is whether this downward slope brought about by the Somaliland governments rush to attend the London Conference on Somalia, will cause it to free fall into the abyss or whether the slide will be due to a temporary misstep after which Somaliland will regain her balance and will continue the journey with her renowned stride.

 

Is this hasty decision to participate in the London Conference and the unprecedented unanimous support given to Mr. Ahmed Mohamed Silanyos government by the legislative houses, political parties and some community elders an expression of desperation after twenty years of seeking recognition have came to nothing? Or is it an attempt to change tactics and to reposition Somalilands foreign strategy by adopting a new policy of engagement with the international community and the TFG instead of the standing policy of Somalilands successive governments that was based on digging in their heels? Is the governments decision a pre-emptive action aimed at stymieing any attempts by the recently declared mini-states of Awdal and Khaatumo to be heard in the London Conference? Or is it a long and drawn out agenda, carefully crafted with shrewdness and deceit by President Silanyo and his henchmen to scuttle Somalilands sovereignty and trade it for a heros welcome and posts in Mogadishu?

 

To save time and space, I will leave most of the above questions open to be answered by time, but I will tackle the last one, speculating on Mr. Silanyos perceived intentions and agenda for Somaliland.

Eventhough Bashir Goth seems to have understood quite well where the road is leading to, he is reasing or linking it to Siilanyo's damaged ego in SNM times is ridicules. He is giving all the credit to Siilanyo, as being the only one with Unionist tendencies. People need to understand that every single intelligent Somaliland politician from whatever clan who carries responsibility would have taken the same road as Siilanyo is taking. Maybe with a diffrence in leadership style or strategy, but still they would have embarked on the same road when the (zeitgeist) or the right timing. All German leaders from Adenauer, Brandt or Kohl would have made the same choices of unification, but only under Kohl's time in 1989 it became possible to unite West and East due to the Zeigeist. And today things are possible that were not yesterday, irrelevent of Siilanyo's history, ego or wished legacy.

Siilaanyos' stance on Somalia is hardly comparable to Kohl and others. Maybe self-interest might lead him to unification but there's no other motive for him.

Che, Faisal alone is not enough. Plus, most of the time, Faisal is just a joke. There has to be a proper opposition in the media.

 

Having said all of that, I don't (of course) agree with Goth's speculation above. Siilaanyo is more extereme than even the Guru when it comes to the SL cause. It's a waste of time to argue otherwise.

People in opposition often like to play on others fears in the hopes of gaining popular support. People did it when Riiyaale (UDUB) was in power claiming he was setting up Somaliland and wanted to bring it to Xamar, now some people in opposition to Siilanyo are saying the same about him. The only thing that's changed are the actors but the message remains the same. No Somaliland president will ever sell out our country that much is assured, these folks need to take a chill pill and find more constructive ways to criticize.
