Somalia: World turns blind-eye to Somaliland's savage aggressions [Editorial]

GAROWE ONLINE EDITORIAL | What is painfully clear to all Somalis is the international community’s deafening silence on Somaliland’s savage attacks against Buhodle.

 

It is the painful sight of the young children. Some boys and girls look as young as 6 or 8 years of age. They were wounded during Somaliland’s savage aggression against Buhodle district – military aggressions that began in February 2011, then again in May 2011, and now during the first month of 2012. The repeated Somaliland violent onslaught targeting Buhodle district and its inhabitants – including the mothers and their children – has forced thousands of nomadic clansmen to take up arms and courageously defend their liberty and their right to self-determination.

 

In the Noble Qur’an, Allah Almighty asks: “For what crime was she killed?” (81:9)

 

Indeed, those children did not commit any crime, perhaps other than to belong to a particular clan and region of Somalia that has become a target for Somaliland. In looking at the heart-breaking photographs of wounded civilians transferred to a hospital in Puntland’s city of Galkayo, one aches to comprehend the reason and cause that motivates Somaliland’s deep hatred and inherent complexities that lead to the committing of war crimes against civilian populations in Buhodle. In October 2007, when Somaliland seized Las Anod city, the situation was different: Las Anod was betrayed by her own sons, who allowed Somaliland forces to march in to the city and displace upwards of 50,000 civilians, according to UN estimates. But in Buhodle, despite bribing local officials, Somaliland has failed to infiltrate Buhodle society in a similar fashion to events in Las Anod. Each time the bribing effort failed, Somaliland provided even more bribes hoping that the situation would magically transform into the Hargeisa regime’s favor. When all the exponentially increasing bribes did not bring results, Somaliland’s tyrannical leaders who engaged in the 1990s genocides in northern Somalia could not believe their eyes – that the people of Buhodle are willing to die to defend their liberty and their right to self-determination. No man on earth has a right to impose a political or religious idea on any person or community.

 

It was the people of Somaliland, who in the 1980s, led the SNM struggle to liberate the northwestern cities of Hargeisa and Burao from the iron grip of the Barre dictatorship. The SNM and its supporters claimed the right to self-determination. Today, as if that memory was irrelevant, it is Somaliland’s SNM leadership that has overlooked recent history and is now behaving in manner similar to the Barre regime. If Somaliland had warplanes, it can be argued that Somaliland would have conducted airstrikes against Buhodle.

Regardless of where any of us stand on this issue, these 'Blame Somaliland' accusations are only coming from one particular corner of Somali society. Thus far, the international community has not made one statement accusing Somaliland of aggression. I've combed news portals for a single non-Somali news outlet (in particular Western and Arab) accusing Somaliland of aggression and have not found any.

 

The international community has become sophisticated enough on Somali issues to understand the complexity of this situation and no amount of opinionated clan-call to arms will muddy the waters of international perception.

 

Somaliland's image stands (for the key stakeholders) as the ideal blueprint for where the international community would like the rest of Somalis to reach.

Garoweonline should go speak to his father and tell him to end this garbage before it expands. If you kill 1 thousand of them and threaten burco and hargeisa you will never hear from these guys again. Asking for international mediation is not working farole needs to change the policy to a military one then will the international community pay attention.

 

My policy towards this area would be to attack go through cayn and take out the secessionist and go all the way to burco and capture it. They will fight back but their not big clan as evident from abdullahi yusuf in 2003 sending mainly galkayo boys down there and not all puntland. Once burco is captured then a peace-deal needs to be cut or move on to hargeisa untill the international community cannot overlook it. At the peace-table a negiotation should take place and to warn the rebels in hargeisa that they are not allowed to interfere in puntland's territory and the international community must witness this and everyone stay on their side of the border.

 

Anything less will not stop somaliland bribing politicians and interfering politically in Puntland's territories, which leads up to conflict in the region today. Puntland is silly for allowing external ppl to interfere in the region politically and militarily this is what caused the issue to begin with, if xabsades didnt have a host in hargeisa and was told "sorry we cannot host u or that will mean a war with pland" this would issue wouldnt reach where it is today.

 

Puntland best path is to take it militarily to Somaliland and cause heavy casulties in the thousands range untill they see there is nothing left of them, once they do that and capture burco open up peace talks and the peace-talks can only mean both party cannot interfere in each other's regions, the borders are defined up to ainaybo and erigavo, if either party moves beyond that this will break the peace agreement and the offending stakeholder can face a sea of bullets. Nimanka sida aideed looga farisiye mudug wa in looga farisiya SSC and puntland should take a leading role because this can easily spill into puntland and jepordise our oil production so its best the govt starts now and reaches an agreement or else the region will be seen as chaotic and noone will invest in the long-term.

 

By the way my father spoke to a buhodle guy today and he told him that Sicid dheere is not happy with farole policy and he took it to him and said we need to fight these ppl and farole said no, sicid dheere went back to the base and asked all the ssc folks to step to one side and discharged them from puntland army and told them to go to buhodle and defend your people he gave them 10-15 trucks with its petrol and guns. ^^^ great news... i doubt they will even fight...but if they do its great news..for Somaliland..it no longer becomes an internal issue but an external confrontation..and hence the softly approach in regards to buhoodle does not apply...This would be a full military engagement which will lead to devastation on their side... Garowe here we come..........
