At Least 60 Somali Asylum Seekers Jailed in Angola

 

Luanda — At least 60 Somali asylum-seekers, mostly youngsters were taken into custody by Angolan police forces in the past few days, witnesses said.

 

Specific number of Somali immigrants in Angola, confirmed to Shabelle Media station in Mogadishu by phone that the police carried out widespread operations in several locations, targeting Somali asylum-seekers.

 

Sources said the police released some Somali detainees from the detention centers after taking a ransom.

 

"We witnessed a panic and hardships from the police forces of Angola in the recent weeks, because of they are targeting only Somali asylum-seekers living here in a bid to earn or take an illegal ransom from the jailed Somali national," a Somali national living in Angola complained.

 

Meanwhile, Somali immigrants in Angola have asked Somali government to turn its attention to the Somali nationals jailed in the foreign countries who are currently in dire need of help for their save release.

 

The Angolan government has yet to release any statement on the illegal mass arrest of the police against Somali nationals living across the country.

10 Somali Businessmen Killed in South Africa in past 5 days.

 

Cape Town — Armed South African Gangs have deliberately killed 10 Somali businessmen in the past five days after robbing their shopping centers in across that country, reports said.

 

Several Somali immigrants living inSouth Africa confirmed to Shabelle Media the killings, saying that they were very concerned about the deliberately killing against Somalis in South Africain recent weeks.

 

The latest reports from South Africa say that most of the Somali youngsters in country had decided to leave and go back home after failing to endure further the endless deadly attacks against them by South African armed gangs who also accustomed to loot properties owned by Somalis.

 

Somali community leaders in South Africasay they informed security agencies to protect and stop attacks against the innocent Somali immigrants living from corner to corner in that country.

 

"We reported to the national security agencies ofSouth Africaabout this to stop such cruel actions against Somali people, but yet the government has so far promised it would tighten the security of Somali immigrants," a Somali businessman told Shabelle Media through telephone, on condition of anonymity, because of his security.

 

It was two weeks ago when at least 20 shopping centers belonging to Somalis were looted by South African armed groups. The police assured Somalis only to save their lives instead their properties.

Kenyan Police Arrest 15 Somalis Over Explosions

 

Mandera — Kenyan Police have arrested at least 15 Somali men suspected to be behind the soaring spate of grenade attacks in North-Eastern region, witnesses said on Sunday.

 

The suspects, who are of Somali nationals, were taken into custody for further investigations about yesterday's blast that hit a convoy of pick-ups mounting police forces in Mandera, inuring two soldiers.

 

A police official, who asked for anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the press, said Sunday that the suspects were detained in an operation conducted by the army inside Mandere town, North-Eastern Kenya.

 

Nine of the arrested people are reportedly released after the police didn't find any guilty over the bombing while the rest of six others are still held at a local jail in Mandera.

Tanzania: 43 Foreigners Suffocate in Truck

 

Dodoma —

Some 43 foreign nationals believed to be of Somali and Ethiopian origin have been found dead in a truck that they were reportedly travelling in from Arusha to Mbeya through Dodoma.

 

Initial reports have indicated that they succumbed to death due to suffocation inside the cargo truck in Chitego village in Kongwa District, roughly two kilometres from Kiteto District.

 

A total of 113 people were said to be travelling in the truck. A Kongwa district official, who spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not the official spokesperson, confirmed the deaths.

 

The source said it was the driver of the vehicle who first discovered that the passengers had died after he heard noises and decided to open the truck's window.

 

"After he had learnt of the dead, the driver abandoned the truck," the source said. Bodies of the dead were taken to Kiteto District Hospital for preservation while the remaining 70 people who survived, some in critical condition, were being questioned at Kiteto police station.

20 migrants towed ashore in dinghy

 

A group of 20 migrants arrived in Malta yesterday on a rubber dinghy that was towed to shore after they refused to board the armed forces’ patrol boat.

 

The group of 15 men, three women and two children claimed to be Somalis who left from Tunisia.

 

They had been located about 12 nautical miles south of Filfla on Wednesday night.

NAIROBI, July 6 (Reuters) –

Somalia’s government accused Kenya on Friday of awarding offshore oil and gas exploration blocks illegally to multinationals Total and Eni because the concessions lie in waters claimed by Somalia.

The spat between Kenya and its war-ruined neighbour could complicate the hunt for resources along a partof the East African coastline, rapidly emerging as one of the world’s hottest oil exploration prospects.

 

Somalia’s deputy energy minister, Abdullahi Dool, said contracts awarded for four blocks in deep waters were invalid and the government planned to complain to the United Nations, which oversees maritime border laws. “We are concerned about the lease of blocks,” Dool told Reuters. “I am sure we will lodge complaints.”

 

The blocks are among seven awarded by Kenya last week, three of them to Italy’s Eni and one to France’s Total. They lie in an area long contested by Kenya, East Africa’s biggest economy, and Somalia, wrecked by more than two decades of civil war,

split between an interim government and Islamist rebels and serving as the main base for Indian Ocean pirates.

 

Kenya rejected the accusation that ownership of the blocks was contested and said there was no need to hold up exploration. Kenya’s first major oil discovery in March has raised expectations of more to come.

“Saying these are not Kenyan blocks is like saying we don’t have a full-fledged government, like we are a banana republic,”

petroleum commissioner Martin Heya said.

 

An Eni spokesman said the company would not comment on the challenge to its rights to blocks L21, L23 and L24. Total, awarded block 122, did not respond to requests for comment.

 

Kenya says the maritime boundary, over which there is no formal agreement, should run due east from the point at which the land border meets the coast, like the maritime boundaries of other countries along the coast.

Somalia says the boundary should extend perpendicular to the coastline, giving it a big chunk of the waters claimed by Kenya. The dispute mirrors those in other parts of Africa where resources straddle boundaries that were first drawn only vaguely by colonial era map makers.

 

Kenya and Somalia signed a memorandum of understanding in 2009 that the border would run east along the line of latitude, but Somalia, which has lacked an effective central government since 1991, then rejected the agreement in parliament. The quarrel over the oil blocks strains otherwise close ties between Kenya and the Somali government. In fact, Kenya sent troops into Somalia last year to hunt down the Islamist al Shabaab rebels who control swathes of the country.

 

Joshua Brien, a legal adviser with the Commonwealth Secretariat who is advising Kenya on the matter, said no legal boundary can be established until both governments sign a U.N.-approved agreement or move the issue to an international court. “It’s not impossible they could come to a resolution, but the situation in Somalia is so uncertain,” Brien told Reuters by phone from London.

 

An added frustration for Kenya is that it cannot extend its claim to the continental shelf beyond its 200 nautical miles (370 km) of territorial waters until the border spat is resolved. That holds up the award of more exploration licenses.
