Jacaylbaro Posted January 11, 2012 In 2011 Chatham House held a small roundtable meeting with Somaliland politicians, civil society, diaspora and thinkers along with experts and observers from key international partners. The roundtable was held under Chatham House Rule, and aimed to encourage new thinking about Somaliland's place in the world twenty years after it's self-declared, and still unrecognised, independence. This conference summary presents some of the issues raised in the discussion. http://www.chathamhouse.org/sites/default/files/public/Research/Africa/1211confsummary.pdf
Carafaat Posted January 11, 2012 Can Somaliland help the South? At present Somaliland is able to operate independently with relatively little obstruction as there is little in the way of effective government at a national level in Somalia. However, if Somaliland fails to resolve its relations with the rest of Somalia problems are likely to be stored up for the future. Possible challenges include the potential for a spillover of violence from the South, or a future political or military contestation of Somaliland’s right to exist by a functioning central government of Somalia. Though the issue of relations with Somalia is highly contentious, it cannot be ignored. I have been telling this for years. Why wont nobody listen?? Xaaji Xunjuf Posted January 11, 2012 Carafaat it's very hard for Somalia and Somalland to resolve their problems now , Somalia' needs to solve its problems first than we can talk about possible cooperation. But Somalia needs to sort it self out first get rid of Foreign mercenaries establish a real government in Somalia get rid of the fake jihadist with no real plans for the future. Carafaat Posted January 11, 2012 Oodweyneh, The question is what will you gain from your hawkish position now? And what kind of unwanted consequences could it lead to? You only look from the current weak position of Somalia. Somethoing that could change in near future and then Chatham analysis could come true of a hostile standoff between Somalia and Somaliland. Wouldnt you say? While on the other hand a more public diplomatic position wouldnt weakong your position now anor lead to future frictions.
