Qandalawi Posted December 25, 2011 Video and photos of an appreciation event to thank Canada and Turkey for their assistance to victims of famine in Somalia Posted by Pi on December 25th, 2011 The Canadian Somali Congress and the Alberta Somali Community Center recently hosted an appreciation event in Ottawa, Canada, to thank the Canadian government and the Republic of Turkey for responding very quickly and generously to the recent and ongoing famine in Somalia. Canada’s response to the recent famine was ahead of any major western country and Minister Bev Oda’s visit to the region was the first by any government representative from the developed countries. The Canadian government and public donated more than $235 million towards this famine. This was the largest contribution to the famine as measured on a per-capita basis. The republic of Turkey has stood shoulder to shoulder with the Somali people in their time of need and has collected over $300 million to tackle the famine. We thanked the Republic of Turkey for setting up a brotherly model of assistance for Somalia. This aid model goes beyond the provision of basic humanitarian assistance into real capacity building initiatives like building hospitals and providing hundreds of post-secondary academic scholarships to needy Somali students.
