Brazil grind out 3-0 victory to win Copa

Eurosport - Mon, 16 Jul 00:11:00 2007

Brazil have lifted their eighth Copa America trophy after defeating Argentina 3-0 in the final.

Dunga's side sacrificed their trademark flair and guile for a defensive, counter-attacking game, but they still managed to beat tournament favourites Argentina convincingly.

It took only six minutes for them to take the lead. Julio Baptista was on his own as he received a long ball on the left side of the penalty area, but the striker needed no help. He pushed the ball around Ayala and fired his stunning strike into the top corner past keeper Abondanzieri.

Argentina almost replied instantly as Messi pulled the ball back from the byline to Riquelme, but the playmaker's shot cannoned off of the post. It proved to be their best chance.

Brazil, who had been criticised fopr their conservative play throughout the tournament, started to come forward in numbers, and Maicon's low strike from distance was fumbled out for a corner by Abondanzieri.

Riquelme forced a good save from goalkeeper Doni with a strike from the edge of the box, but it was the only real the Brazilian shot-stopper had to make.

On the 40th minute it was heartbreak for Argentina captain and veteran defender Roberto Ayala.

He was sprinting back to cover another Brazil break, but Dani Alves whipped a low cross in and Ayala could only steer it into his own net at the near post.

Argentina's watefulness at set pieces continued in the second half, with Riquelme consistently hitting free kicks straight at Juan and Alex, who were both solid at the back.

The crowning glory came when Vagner Love and Alves broke two on two, and Love slipped it through for Alves to fire home from a tight angle.

^ Same here!

Argentina dissappointed me, Big time!

Why did they include useless Veron in the squad, he does doing nothing at all.

Even though I always disliked Brazil, they really deserved to win. They played well, were organised and converted their chances.
