Changed Posted July 2, 2003 Reality of Repentance By Imam Ibnul Qayyim The realities of repentance are to: -feel the seriousness of the sin; -suspect the truthfulness of the repentance; and -be angry for Allah’s sake whenever Allah’s commands are violated. The repenting servant should see his sin as a grave and significant offense. If he underestimates it then he actually does not regret it. The degree of his remorse is related to the degree of his fear due to the graveness and severity of the sin. When a person loses a cent, he may not feel badly for its loss, however, if he realizes that it was a dollar he will feel bad. Being sensitive to the significance and enormity of the sin develops from three aspects: a great regard for the commands and prohibitions of Allah; a great regard for the Commander (Allah); and a firm belief in reward and retribution. The repenting servant should suspect the veracity of his repentance. A sensible servant is always afraid that he is not sincere in his repentance for he didn’t put all his efforts into making his repentance complete and sound. He is always afraid that his repentance has impurities that might taint its sincerity. He is afraid that he didn’t make repentance out of fear of Allah, but rather for a desire to safeguard his possessions, social status, to attract people’s praise or because he doesn’t have the time or energy to pursue the sin. He may be afraid that the commission of the sin may affect his sustenance, or any other such ills that would affect the sincerity of the repentance to Allah. The servant repents because of fear of Allah, honoring His prohibitions, dignifying Allah, fearing that he will get farther away from Him and will be blocked from seeing His Face in the Hereafter.
