NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 24 – Nairobi suffered a grenade attack early on Monday morning that left 14 people injured, in the wake of persistent warnings by terrorist group Al Shabaab which is protesting a Kenyan military offensive targeting them in lawless Somalia.

 

Police and witnesses told Capital News a hand grenade was hurled inside Mwaura’s pub located in a dingy lane off Mfangano Street in down town Nairobi at about 2am.

 

The victims were rushed to the Kenyatta National Hospital where they were admitted with injuries inflicted by shrapnel.

 

“We were called immediately it happened. We have been able to assess the damage and everything points to a grenade attack,” Nairobi Provincial Police chief Antony Kibuchi said at the scene.

 

Kibuchi said they had launched investigations to establish if the grenade attack was linked to the threats issued by Al Shabaab militants who have lately warned of reprisal attacks in the capital Nairobi.

 

The US embassy in Nairobi warned on Saturday of an “imminent threat” of attacks possibly targeting foreigners, one week after Kenyan forces crossed into Somalia to hunt down the Al Shabaab fighters.

 

The embassy cited “credible information of an imminent threat of terrorist attacks directed at prominent Kenyan facilities and areas where foreigners are known to congregate, such as malls and night clubs.”

I think kenya made a fatal mistake in invading somalia in the pretext of fighting AS. kenya always seemed to play neutral in the somali affairs, or so i thought, they should not have given a reason for such attack to happen to them as they are very vulnerable.

Kenyan police say they are linking a grenade attack on a Nairobi nightclub to recent threats against Kenya issued by al-Shabab fighters.

 

The attack, early on Monday at the Mwauras disco in the Kenyan capital, left 14 people injured, according to police.

 

It followed warnings of attacks by al-Shabab after Kenyan forces crossed into Somalia to hunt down members of the armed group, who are blamed for a series of recent abductions near the Somali border.

 

"Yes, we are linking the grenade attack to the threats that have been issued by al-Shabab and that is why I am appealing to city residents to be vigilant and co-operate with our officers," said Antony Kibuchi, provincial police chief for Nairobi.

 

But Peter Greste, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Nairobi, said there was no hard evidence linking the group to the attack.

 

"What the police are saying is 'We simply have a coincidence of the warning from al-Shabab that they would attack Kenya, and then we have the grenade attack from last night'," he said.

 

"There is absolutely no physical evidence whatsoever, and it could be any one of a number of people."

 

"This could be criminal, such as business rivals looking to damage a competitor, or it could be al-Shabab sympathisers," he said.

 

On Saturday, the US embassy in Nairobi issued a warning over possible attacks, citing "credible information of an imminent threat of terrorist attacks directed at prominent Kenyan facilities and areas where foreigners are known to congregate, such as malls and nightclubs."

 

The wounded were taken to Nairobi's national Kenyatta Hospital. A doctor told Reuters news agency that some were seriously injured but most had light head injuries.

 

Bernard Momanyi, a journalist in Nairobi, told Al Jazeera that all of those wounded were Kenyan nationals.

 

Kenya sent troops into Somalia following the abductions of a British tourist, a disabled French woman who has since died in captivity and two Spanish aid workers. Al-Shabab, which denies kidnapping foreigners, has repeatedly warned of bloody retaliation.

And don't forget, Kenya's invasion will also serve a perfect cover for other foreign intelligence, and local saboteurs to do their deeds as well as Alshabaab will be blamed for all insecurities in Kenya.

^^Yes that is the sad thing about this invasion. Somalis are doing well in Kenya. Kenya generally enjoys peace and security...but all of that may change now.

^I know but also Kenya will pay a high price should they pursue this war. Kenya needs the Somali people's business and economy in their country and the Somalis need the security they have there, if both factors disappear it affect all, plus Kenya does not have the logistical capability to stop any attacks anywhere being carried out in their country by Alshabaab specially if the population of Somalis living there find them hostile and enemies, and do not work with them.
