On 20 March 2011, the Pastor Terry Jones staged a mock trial of the Quran, found it guilty and burned it to the horror of Muslims all over the world. The burning sparked protests in many parts of the world including Afghanistan where 12 innocent people lost their lives when Muslim zealots attacked a UN building in Mazar-e-sharif in a retaliatory attack. In Somalia, we have Sheikh Siiro who is known for his fiery Friday sermons. He is the type of Muslim cleric who uses the Quran as a means of justifying certain behaviors in society. For example, while the Quran calls for Muslim Unity, he preaches to his congregation the virtues of a separate Somali enclave known as Somaliland: an enclave that is based on defunct colonial borders. He always manages to find verses from the Quran that justify his distorted and divisive stands that may sometimes be against the main pillars of Islam. Most of his Friday sermons are politicized. He is instrumental in the downfall of Rayale, the former president of Somaliland. He is now waging a verbal war against the current president who he suspects of working clandestinely for becoming the President of a United Somalia. While Pastor Jones uses fear to rally his congregation against Islam, Siiro uses distorted Quranic verses and questionable sayings of the Prophet to rally his followers in the Hawadle Mosque in Hargeisa for whatever cause he happens to be supporting at that point in time. For example, in a sermon he gave a few years ago on the occasion of the Muslim Eid, he encouraged his followers to send 500 men to the Northeast to marry from the clans there that are opposed to the dismemberment of Somalia. He compared this action with the behavior of the Prophet of Islam, Peace be upon him, who used to marry from the clans opposed to his message so as to win them over to the Muslim Faith. The Sheikh always manages to find a justification for his distorted and divisive messages. The most recent plunder by the Sheikh occurred during a sermon on the occasion of the latest Eid-el-Fitr when Muslims ended their month-long fast in Ramadan. He blasted the Somaliland administration for collecting $600,000 earmarked for the famine victims in Southern Somalia. The Sheikh contends that the thousands of poor people in Hargeisa, the capital of Somaliland, are more worthy of receiving this money than the dying children in the South. He also belittled the Somaliland administration for failing to secure some of the billions of dollars collected for the famine victims in the South. While it is true that there are thousands of destitute people in Somaliland and other places in Somalia, the scale of starvation in the South dwarfs such poverty. The death of 29,000 children in the South has not moved the Sheikh like other normal human beings. The emaciated limbs of starving children have not shaken the Sheikh. The grieving mothers who abandoned their weakest children to the hyenas have not moved the Sheikh one iota. The Quran Siiro uses to preach his divisive messages calls for mercy and compassion. The Quran Siiro uses to preach his divisive messages calls for Muslim Unity and empathy. It seems that the Sheikh is driven by hate for all Southern Somalis. He fears that the lending of a helping hand by Somalis in the Northwest to the starving children in the South will rekindle the hunger most Somalis have for a strong and united Somalia. He fears that such empathy will reawaken the “Somali-Spirit” that seems to have been lost over 20 years of anarchy and divisive Siiro preaching. Let us hope that Somalis in the Northwest will ignore Siiro and help their brothers in the South. Let us hope that they will remember the famous Somali saying: “Bawdo Rag, maalinba midbaa Qaawan”. As for the Sheikh, I would recommend that he takes a strong doze of Oxytocin which has been found to enhance social-empathy in human beings. One time the Sheick had a land dispute over one of his restaurants with the Hargeysa municipility. They told him its illegal to build part of his restaurant on the public road. The next friday. He is a hate-monger. By the way his proposal of sending 500 men to marry from SSC is not that outrageous. Dadka unbaa isku soo dhawaan lahaa. Why does he think the men will convert the girls?
