Somaliland government to deport all illegal immigrants from the country within 30 days.

Recommended Posts

^ LoL...that's because dad badan ayaa u arka Ethiopia (and Ethiopians by extension) as cadowga Somalida numero uno.

Anyway I agree with you, there is no point in making these sorts of announcements if it can't be done right. And it can't at this stage.

Immigration is in most countries a very painfull and sensitive topic. Even more in countries that have large own migrants abroad(like Somaliland).

Doing it correctly? 30 days isn't enough for you, what is the correct way of handling this situation?
:)

And you really believe that getting rid of a hundred thousand people (as the SL government claims) within one month gives everyone ample time to state their case or those genuine enough to be allowed to stay? You believe that a government that threatens its own citizens with "consequences" for helping such people is going to be fair to said people? This is correct in your eyes, is it?

There are many acceptable ways that the government can deal with this. First of all, they can break these immigrants into different categories and give them different deadlines (for their cases to be looked out and heard). For example, a man that arrives today should not be treated in the same way to one that lived in SL for ten/fifteen years. A family with young children should not be pushed out unprepared, etc.

But, most of all, the government should watch the way it speaks and deals with such issues. I believe they have failed on every count.

^For the vast majority - there isn't much of a case - they're economic migrants struggling to make it. And as far as I know - there isn't an official Somaliland immigration policy that would grant them residency. This whole announcment is pointless. If you're serious about the Oromos then you start with controlling your border, finding out how and where these ppl are coming in. And by limiting the pull factor that is bringing these people in. Why should the person who hires the illegal Oromo suffer no consequences when they're complicit in breaking the law by hiring them? How can you be a supporter of these deportations when you employ illegals? These folks are not coming in to beg on the streets - they could do that at home in their own language.

As Somalis we should be especially sensitive to this sort of half assed scapegoating when no real effective policy is being articulated let alone being implemented.

Ngonge awoow you are comparing Tufaax with Liin. How can you compare Somaliland with European countries or North American countries, so what if there are other Somali refugees in the west America it's self is the land of the Immigrants no one can claim America except the red Indians . Wasn't Kenya complaining about Somali refugees in Kenya and even when Somalia was hit by drought and mass famine broke out there , Didn't the Kenyan authorities say somalis must leave our Country.

El Punto,

Yes. But a fair law does not work along the lines of "for the vast majority..etc..etc". As for how these people come in, it actually works out both way. Many Somalilanders travel to Ethiopia without any papers or permits. I am not sure if they're getting deported too.

This might be a genuine attempt by the SL authorities to control immigration. However the language being used and unrealistic targets also make it look like a disgusting case of xenophobia.

I compare SL to all countries of the world, saaxib. Adiga ma dawlad baad doonaysa mise maqaaxi? Dawlad haday tahay dee waa in ay dawlad mab'da leh noqoto oo xaqqa tageerta mar walba. Anigu mab'da ahaan baan ka hadlaya saaxib. Dowladan waa in ay qof walba (xita Ormo xabagta jecel) xaq kula dhaqanta; hadii kale bari uun ayay ku odhan Xaaji X waa qurbajoog aan wadanka wax o tarin, hala musaafiriyo. Wax fahan. :D

WELL SAID....It's an earth scourging policy.For a somali who been/still there (in same situation)around 4 corners of the world to even contemplate such an idea is down right disgusting...Are we in some kind of suspense mood here!!

Most somalis north of Mogadishu ran to Ethiopia when civil war broke out (and yes among oromos),and there r still 100,000s in addis.Are you people blind to ur surroundings & the ugly backlash that can come out of this.Yeeee far right groups in the west r right then..everyone go back to ur back yard.

i dont think there are many ethiopians in somaliland comparing to the somalis that made ethiopia their home so what if ethiopia were to say deport all the somalis back to their country. hmmm not a very good idea!

Ethiopia GDP is growing at world record levels and that those left behind are, as usual, mostly the Oromos and nomads such as Somalis or Afars; Now, is the influx of Oromos overwhelming and negative enough to warrant these knee-jerk reactions?

The only clear fact is that such immigrants labor hard in our farms and houses, contributing more to our living standards than our fellow local Somalis.

In fact, anthropologically, the frontier between Oromos and Somalis has always been both tenuous and shifting (just like with clans);

many now speak fluent Somali and are more Somali than many "authentic Somalis" (for want of better word).

Crucially, many of them are muslim and that populous group's potential role in Ethiopia and regional affairs is momentous.

Thus, the bottom line is that authorities should focus on crime and the underlying addictions/public health & urban planning issues as these fluxes are self-regulating and not yet warranting measures beyond security checks and borders control;

one should indeed worry much more about the diaspora and elite destructive role in eroding both mores and environmental resources.

People, the old man makes sense and your arguments are not persuasive enough.

Who knew Norf is GOPer, a real teabugger and a supporter of the minuteman project.

Abu-Salman...The numbers indicating Ethiopia's economic growth is distorted and is not true reflection of its economic might.

True Che, this time Ngonge and co liberalism should be embraced;

this immigrants/others is an issue where conservatism springs more from fear than cold assesment of what really matters.

As for Ethiopia GDP growth numbers, even if we allow for few points less and its unsustainable nature, this sounds quite threatening for the overall balance.

On a side note, it's likewise true that social liberalism is not, in final analysis, all that progressive;

zero tolerance for addictions and misplaced entertainment, safeguard of traditional family values etc will always protect the more vulnerable and those facing hard times much better than handouts, while preventing all sorts of huge public services, individual and productivity losses...

Ngonge - due process is good in itself but it's not going to make any difference to these migrants. There is no naturalization law and the end result of the due process is deportation.

Abu - no country permits unrestricted migration. There are too many downsides to that. How the Somaliland government has gone about this is mistaken but utlimately free migration of Oromos into Somaliland is not a desirable long term phenomenon. There has been quite a bit of friction between Somalis and Oromos in Kilinka 5ad particularly in the south with the Boran. I don't think the relations between the 2 groups is all that rosy despite the many commonalities. If Somaliland or Somalia had an actual immigration policy - I agree that Oromos would be good candidates for immigration especially those with education or capital. But we're clearly not at that stage.

Folks making comparisons with the fact that Ethiopia permits free movement of Somalis into its territory to this new 'policy' are under a mis impression. Somalis live and have lived in the territory that is within Ethiopia for centuries. Crossing into this territory from Somalia proper is not comparable to an Oromo moving to Hargeisa. Somalis didn't make these borders and when Ethiopia pushed Britain to take over this region it knew that it was dealing with nomads for whom this border meant nothing. Which is why the present policy is as it is.

Everyone knows they refugees when urban somalis cross to ethiopia.They usually settle in camps(i.e. xashin) or go to big urban centers if they have money; a lot of us moved to Addis & otha towns deep inside Ethiopia; outside the somali region & they don't intend to come back atleast in the near future.Colonial politics aside, it's a fact we r in ethiopia; so wat you saying is it's o.k. for us & not for thm ,plus isn't it conceivable there could be some kind retribution...and what about the humanity side & the sensitivity of it all, specially us as a people who suffered so much & been refugees in otha countries for so long.Imagine somalis in Addis "only" told to leave tomorrow!!!! It seems we r neva going to learn!

It's good for people to interact,intermarry,trade & feel at ease with each otha.....that will bring the collapse of these artificial borders & toward peace & prosperity.I see it the greatest achievement in the horn.

And what have these so called leaders done for the people?Everything is built by ordinary folks..schools,universities,electricity,water,t.v,telephone cos,money exchange,roads,bridges,hospitals, etc.Let anyone tell me what they accomplished...they couldn't even make roads for the capital(Hargeisa).This is a cynical move to busy ordinary citizens so they won't be able to travel to ethiopia by road! for wat eva reason.....and certainly to rejuvenate hostilities.
