The Begining of the End-Rebels in Tripoli

Libya rebels advance into Tripoli after fierce fighting

A convoy of Libyan rebels has rolled into Tripoli past celebrating crowds after a day of heavy fighting in and around the capital.

They appeared to meet little resistance and civilians emerged to cheer them, waving flags and firing salutes as they passed in their pick-ups.

It was unclear how far they had advanced and how much of the city was still under government control.

The rebels say they have captured Col Muammar Gaddafi's son Saif al-Islam.

National Transitional Council chairman Mustafa Mohammed Abdul Jalil informed al-Jazeera TV of the capture.

Col Gaddafi is believed to still have thousands of armed followers in the capital but other reports suggest a number of them have been surrendering to the rebels.

Gun battles have been raging near a hotel used by foreign journalists. Rebel forces advanced from the east and west in recent days, backed by Nato aircraft enforcing a UN resolution to protect civilians.

The UK Government said on Sunday night: "It is clear from the scenes we are witnessing in Tripoli that the end is near for Gaddafi. He has committed appalling crimes against the people of Libya and he must go now to avoid any further suffering for his own people."

Bloody battles

As one force of rebels arrived from the west, another was setting up checkpoints in suburbs on the eastern outskirts.

It is clear there have been bloody battles in parts of Tripoli, the BBC's Matthew Price reports from the city.

In areas where the fighting has not been taking place, people are said to be staying indoors, our correspondent adds.

Gunfire could be heard to the east, west and south of the city centre. Four loud explosions were also heard.

Gaddafi was a big time financial contributor to the African Union and he believed in its mission and objectives despite his long tyrannical rule of Libya.

It's too early to know exactly the country to which the overthrown dictator absquatulates.

^^ Che, I am getting another feed that Brother Leader has now being captured, but not confirmed yet, the planes did not depart as they were preparing for take off, maybe commanded by Nato not to take off.

The airport is surrounded, and Gadafi is indeed in his compound of Bab Al-Aziziya, th eonly place not captured by the rebels, but they are surrounding it as of now.

Ps: My feeds are from Arabic Channels

Pss: I was also watching Libyan State Jamahiriya TV, they are showing pre-recorded videos, and just went off air of its LIVE debate one hour ago
