Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Saleh to visit Somalia in the next few days

TEHRAN – Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi is scheduled to pay a visit to Somalia in the next few days to facilitate the process of delivery of aid to the famine-stricken people of the country.

 

In addition to holding talks with Somali officials, Salehi plans to examine the ways through which humanitarian aid is being delivered to the famine-hit people and to assess what supplies they require.

 

The main part of Iran’s humanitarian aid will also be handed over to Somali relief organizations during Salehi’s trip.

 

Iran has recently sent its third cargo of humanitarian aid to famine-wracked Somalia.

 

Iranian officials also announced that a cargo of humanitarian assistance weighing 100 tons will be shipped to the African country soon.

 

The two aid cargos that Iran had previously dispatched to Somalia went to the aid of 100,000 Somalis who are struggling with death.

Somalia thanks Iran for sending humanitarian aid

Somali ambassador to Qatar has expressed his gratitude to the Iranian government and people for sending aid to the famine-wracked Africa country.

 

Omar Idris expressed his appreciation during a joint press conference with Iranian Ambassador Abdollah Sohrabi in Doha on Tuesday.

 

Iran has recently sent its third cargo of humanitarian aid to famine-hit Somalia.

 

Iranian officials also announced that another cargo weighing 100 tons will be shipped to the African country soon.

Iran declares August 22 as solidarity day with Somalis

Tehran, Aug 17, IRNA – Iranian Red Crescent Society Wednesday announced that August 22 was named as the day of Iranians’ solidarity with the famine-stricken people of Somalia.

 

 

releasing a statement, the IRCS said, on that day (next Monday), Iranians could deliver their humanitarian aid to special bases which are to be established in diferrent parts of the Iranian cities to collect public aid for the people of Somalia, women and children in particular, who are suffering from a spreading famine and drought in the African state.

 

The United Nations has formally declared a state of famine in five regions in southern and central Somalia, and the number of people in need of food aid and humanitarian assistance across the wider region is more than 12 million.

 

The international body has also predicted that the famine could spread to more areas and last until December.

A delegation of Iranian officials led by Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi has on Tuesday arrived in Mogadishu to accelerate delivery of Iran’s humanitarian aids to the hunger-hit Somali people and assess the crisis situation in the country.

 

Salehi who held a press conference in Adan Ade airport where he was received by Somalia’s interior and national security minister Abdisamad Maalim Mohamud and other top Somali government officials said the main objective of his visit to Somalia is to draw world’s attention to country’s plight.

He said his government has already allocated $ 25 for drought and famine displaced people in Somalia. The Iranian delegation accompanying Salehi includes experts from Iran’s Red Crescent.

Salehi is set to hold talks with Somali government officials on the drought and famine related crisis in the country and visit the refugee camps in the capital, Mogadishu.

Somali PM calls for Iran to continue help

TEHRAN (ISNA)-Somali Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali called for further Iran's aid to the African country following the deadly drought in the country.

 

In a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi in Mogadishu, Somali Prime Minister expressed appreciation over Iran's help to the African country and said, "We call for boosting relations and we hope ties would be expanded further."

 

Salehi on his part said Iran is ready for continuous help to Somalia. Salehi wrapped up his one-day trip to Somali on Tuesday.

 

Salehi also said the country has donated $25 million to the drought-hit Somalia so far. He arrived in Mogadishu Tuesday morning heading a delegation to meet with Somali officials and visit camps of famine-hit Somalis.

 

He said, “Iran has dispatched six batches of humanitarian aid to the famine-struck people of Somalia so far.”

 

He added, “the aid includes foodstuff, medicine and tents so far and we hope to send a batch of 5,000 ton soon."

 

Salehi continued, “We hope to dispatch aid to Somali people living neighboring countries as well."

They want to buy the country, how jaahil of them. Having said that if the situation of self-destruction and lack of a solid governing continues their wish may come true.

 

International investors kulahaa, sawirsanaa waxu. If they only knew how anti-gaal our people were, they would think 2wice :)

Somali president to visit Iran

Foreign Minister of Iran Ali-Akbar Salehi said here Tuesday that the president of Somalia would visit Iran in a near future.

 

Speaking to reporters at the Mogadishu airport upon his arrival, Salehi said the Somali president would discuss with senior Iranian officials ways to dispatch further humanitarian aid to the famine-stricken people in the African state.

Iran has started sending humanitarian relief for the famine and drought-sricken African country since 20 days ago, Salehi said adding that six planeloads of humanitarian aid have so far reached the drought-stricken areas and refugee camps in Somalia.

 

The Iranian foreign minister further said that Tehran was planned to send another 5,000-ton cargo to Somali via ships in the future.

 

Upon his arrival in Mogadishu, Salehi was welcomed by his Somali counterpart and the interior minister of that country.

 

He departed Tehran for Mogadishu early on Tuesday to review critical situation of people in the famine-stricken country.

“In addition, at our request, an emergency meeting was held by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Istanbul to explore ways how to provide aid to the Somali people, and the Iranian economy and finance minister (Shamseddin Hosseini) attended the meeting,” he added.
