PetroTrans May Face Attack in Ethiopia Oil Search, Group Says.

Petrotrans Co., a Chinese oil exploration company, may face attack in Ethiopia’s restive O'gaden region if it begins operations in the area, a U.S.-based advocacy group said.

 

“We urge all foreign oil companies, especially the Chinese oil and gas company PetroTrans, to refrain from undertaking any oil exploration missions in O'gaden,” the Resolve O'gaden Coalition said in an e-mailed statement today.

 

Ethiopia’s mines ministry signed a deal with PetroTrans for it to explore for deposits and develop proven reserves in the region, the state-owned Ethiopian News Agency said on July 22. Petronas Nasional Bhd sold the assets in October as part of what it said was a “rationalization exercise.”

 

The O'gaden National Liberation Front has been fighting for self-determination in the ethnic Somali region since 1984. In April 2007, the banned rebel group attacked an exploration site operated by China’s Zhongyuan Petroleum Exploration Bureau, killing nine Chinese workers and 65 Ethiopians.

 

“We hope PetroTrans will heed our call and advice before another avoidable catastrophe, like the one in Obole 2007, takes place in O'gaden due to their intransigence which puts profits before human rights,” the coalition said today.

 

Ethiopian Communications Minister Bereket Simon and ONLF spokesman Abdirahman Mahdi didn’t answer their mobiles phones when called by Bloomberg today for comment. A call to PetroTrans’s head office in Hong Kong outside normal business hours wasn’t answered.

No sxb I'm not sick like you, Djibouti was the planned option and the proffered one by the Ethiopia government and Oil giant Petronas before they pulled out.Berbera is in Somalia, Somaliland is not a recognised state hence with that comes many difficulties furthermore Somaliland has not curbed all its security issues.Any rational person would bet on Djibouti than berbera which is the primary port of Ethiopia already.

 

Petronas paid $80 million in 2007 for the rights to develop the Calub and Hilala gas fields in Ethiopia’s ****** basin, according to the Reporter, an Addis Ababa-based newspaper. The Malaysian company may also build a gas-treatment plant and a gas pipeline to a port in neighboring Djibouti at a cost of $1.9 billion, the newspaper said.

Berbera is an impoverished port for the Somali region and a few places in Oromia mainly the Hararge province, a lousy income stream overshadowed by Djibouti.This Berbera is important to Ethiopia is hogwash, the biggest commodity Ethiopia and Somaliland trade is security for Somalilands cooperation against anti-Ethiopian establishment groups they receive certain benefits.
