Amisom plans to increase its strength to 12,000 troops in the next couple of months with the addition of soldiers from Nigeria, Djibouti, Guinea and Sierra Leone, along with expansion of the Ugandan and Burundian contingents, Mr Diarra noted. Simultaneously, Amisom is seeking to prove that it can not only defeat Shabaab fighters but can also “deliver the fruits of peace to the Somali people.” Amisom wants to increase its troop strength to 20,000, the level needed for victory over Shabaab in all of Somalia, the AU official indicated.
