Somalina Posted August 21, 2011 Somali rapper K'naan visits famine-struck homeland By ABDI GULED, Associated Press – MOGADISHU, Somalia (AP) — Somali-born rapper K'naan brought his waving flag back home Sunday, promising to help his countrymen as they struggle with a devastating famine that has killed tens of thousands of children. The rapper, who left Somalia as a child more than two decades ago to settle in Canada, made a brief visit to Mogadishu on Sunday. He was mobbed by famine refugees who tried to shake his hand or hug him as he toured Mogadishu's Banadir Hospital and met with malnourished children. "I came to Somalia to see the situation here and give any donation I have to the people and anything else available," he said, speaking in Somali. "I will do all I can to help my people in Somalia." He did not perform his hit song "Wavin' Flag," which tells of the difficulties he faced growing up in the lawless, impoverished Horn of Africa nation. A version of that song was used for a Coca-Cola campaign when South Africa hosted the 2010 World Cup. The United Nations says more than 3.2 million Somalis need food aid. The U.S. says 29,000 Somali children under age 5 have died. The U.N. says tens of thousands of people already have died in Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia and Djibouti and has warned that the famine hasn't peaked. More than 12 million people in the region need food aid, according to the U.N. Somalia has been hit hardest because of a confluence of conflict and climate change. Decades of violence in Somalia has left population vulnerable to the vagaries of weather changes. Islamist insurgents are also attempting to overthrow Somalia's weak U.N.-backed government. The most dangerous among the groups is the al-Qaida-linked al-Shabab militant group, which has barred aid agencies from operating in the territories it controls in southern Somalia. The southern parts of Somalia, which are mainly under the control of al-Shabab extremists, have been worst affected because of the group's refusal to allow in key humanitarian groups including the World Food Program, the world's major aid provider. Somalina Posted August 21, 2011 Sunday, August 21, 2011 KUALA LUMPUR: Putera 1Malaysia Club will leave for Somalia next Sunday to facilitate the distribution of Malaysian humanitarian aid in the famine-hit country. Its president Datuk Azeez Abdul Rahim said a team of 50 people comprising specialists, volunteers and journalists will land at Mogadishu airport before leaving for Merca in southern Somalia for 10 days. They will bring along 200 tonnes of food and items donated by Malaysians and are scheduled to return on Sept 8. “The humanitarian mission will hand out medical assistance, food and clothing to the people of Somalia. “This is not a one-off project as more aid will come after we leave,” he said at its headquarters here yesterday. Azeez said it was the first time that the team had extended any form of assistance to the African region and predicted that they would face different types of challenges during their stay. “We are looking at a region which is pirate-infested and not politically stable,” he said. He also noted that the team needed more female doctors in the mission. “Twenty-five out of the 30 specialists are men,” he said. “In Somalian culture, women do not socialise with men, and we hope that more female doctors would join our team.” President of Udubland Ibrahim Abdullahi Addo, who attended the press conference, thanked Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and the club for the aid. “We will assist the team when they are in Somalia,” he added. Somalina Posted August 23, 2011 Oxfam Airlifts 27 Tonnes of Supplies in Aid to Help Combat the Cholera Outbreak in Mogadishu 23 Aug 2011 Aid group boosts its effort across Somalia as crisis deepens. International agency Oxfam is airlifting 47 tonnes of vital water supply and hygiene materials to Somalia’s capital Mogadishu, as the aid community scales up its effort to bring relief to the drought-stricken country. The first flight will leave Nairobi Thursday morning and is part of Oxfam’s efforts to control the outbreak of cholera and reduce public health risks in highly-populated camps. In total three flights will ferry the aid. The airlift will include water tanks and pipes to set up water points across the capital city as well as tonnes of soap bars and 12,000 jerry cans so people can carry and store water. There is sufficient aid to reach over 120,000 people. Oxfam partner organization, Hijra which operates in Mogadishu and the outskirts of the capital, has seen an increase in cholera cases. Hijra staff have reported that cases affecting children and women are on the rise. The organisation has started a cholera prevention programme that is reaching 20,000 people in three camps for people who have fled to Mogadishu. The work includes distributing oral rehydration salts and soap and a public information campaign advising on ways to reduce the risk of contracting the disease. “Clean water and soap are vital to help prevent a public health crisis, as people weakened by hunger are particularly at risk of disease. With the recent cholera outbreak in Mogadishu, this assistance will save lives. Despite the many challenges of operating in Somalia, Oxfam has years of experience working with partners there to reach people in need,” said Adan Kabelo, Associate Country Director for Oxfam in Somalia. Oxfam partners operate across the country, and are running the largest public health program in Somalia, providing clean water to 250,000 displaced Somalis in camps outside Mogadishu. Oxfam’s partner agencies also operate one of the largest therapeutic feeding programs for children and mothers, feeding 3,000 severely malnourished children every week. Across the country, 3.7 million people-nearly half of the Somali population-are now in crisis, two-thirds of whom reside in the south. Oxfam aims to scale-up its programs to reach 1.4 million people within the next few months. Oxfam has been working in Somalia for over 20 years. The agency, which operates in partnership with local aid organisations, has so far helped over 850,000 in South Somalia, including Mogadishu.
Somalina Posted August 26, 2011 200-bed hospital to be established in Somalia Thursday, August 25, 2011 Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan gave instructions for a three-year medical presence and the construction of a 200-bed hospital in famine-stricken Somalia. In the first stage of the three-year plan, a rotation of doctors and nurses will be sent to the region on a voluntary basis to serve the medical needs of people in need. Physicians and nurses desiring to go to Somalia have already responded to the call. The plan also includes the construction of a fully-equipped 200-bed hospital in Somalia, which has already begun. The director of the German charitable association Cap Anamur's Somalian projects, Volker Rath, said in an interview with the Anatolia news agency Wednesday that the number of refugees taking shelter in the tent camps erected in the Somali capital of Mogadishu has been increasing with each passing day. Rath said the food items brought to Somalia by the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) are not meeting the current needs of the millions of starving Somalis. Aid associations from Turkey, Germany and Arab countries carried out especially successful aid campaigns in the region, Rath said. He also praised the establishment and success of the Turkish field hospital built in Mogadishu. A group of Turkish doctors from the International Association for Health and Education (USEDER) will continue to provide health services to Somalis for an additional six months, according to Anatolia. The doctors, who began working in the Somali capital of Mogadishu two weeks ago, have so far provided medical screening for 2,000 people in eight camps. Faruk Özdemir, a member of USEDER, told Anatolia correspondents that doctors first focused on extremely sick people and children suffering from diarrhea. Özdemir said they had brought two tons of medicines to Mogadishu. "We are eager to reach more patients, but conditions and security problems are preventing it. We are doing our best," he said. Turkish Airlines and Red Crescent have decided to partner in a "money box" ("kumbara" in Turkish) campaign for Somalia. Announcements typically solely reserved for saftey reminders will now include a call for donations for the region. Red Crescent and Turkish Airlines, which ransport nearly 100,000 per day, expect large returns. According to a report by the Turkish Humanitarian Aid Foundation (İHH) on the drought in East Africa, 10.7 million people are waiting for help in Somalia, Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda and Djibouti. The İHH report recommends that countries wishing to help East Africa do so by digging wells in the driest regions, opening new hospitals and developing existing ones, supporting sustainable and modern agriculture, encouraging the development of alternative sectors such as fishery, supporting stockbreeding and providing vocational education courses. The İHH has distributed food to 1,050 families in Somalia this year. The foundation completed 340 water well projects and is currently working on 46 more. http://www.todayszaman.com/news-254794-200-bed-hospital-to-be-established-in-somalia.html

Somalina Posted August 28, 2011 Saudi prince in Mogadishu pledges aid Saturday, August 27, 2011 MOGADISHU - A delegation from the Saudi royal family arrived Saturday in Mogadishu on a one-day visit to see how best to assist the Horn of Africa country hit by famine and drought, officials said. The delegation, led by Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, a nephew of King Abdullah and one of the kingdom’s wealthiest men, arrived in late morning and visited camps for those displaced by the crisis and Banadir hospital, where acutely malnourished children have been dying in large numbers. “I'm very happy to be here in Mogadishu in relative peace but also disappointed with the humanitarian disaster that Somali people are facing,” the prince told reporters, adding that Saudi Arabia would “assist the malnourished children and those in need”. Commenting on closed-door talks he held with Somali president Sharif Sheikh Ahmed before flying home in mid-afternoon, the prince said: “We have discussed the current situation and also future business investments.” The Horn of Africa has been hit by the worst drought in decades, and the UN has described Somalia, where a civil war has been going on since 1991, as facing the most severe humanitarian crisis in the world. Somalina Posted September 29, 2011 WAM Mogadishu, 28th Sept. 2011 (WAM) -- WAHA International will start intervening in the capital Mogadishu to set up a hospital for maternal and newborn care in partnership with the UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA). WAHA International and the RCA are partnering to strengthen maternal and newborn health care services in Mogadishu. Teams are currently preparing to set up a mother and child hospital and to support peripheral health posts which will include comprehensive obstetrc care services such as the possibility to carry out a c-section and blood transfusions. Medical transfer bikes will be deployed to help transport patients to the hospital. The Somalia medical mission is a direct implementation of a memorandum of understanding for a health partnership between the RCA and WAHA International. The project includes support to several health centres and the set up of medical villages to provide nursing care to patients needing basic hospitalization. WAHA International offered 500 inflatable medical tents for mobile clinics in Somalia. WAHA International first intervened in Somalia in 2010 providing fistula surgery to women from Kismayo and Mogadishu. By 2011 WAHA teams started setting up a project for mother-child care in Mogadishu. In July 2011 the United Nations declared famine had hit several regions in Somalia. Drought and on-going conflict have led to an increased outpour of people fleeing within and outside the country. Women and Health Alliance International (WAHA) is an international non-profit, non governmental organisation based in France that has been launched by Sheikha Shamsa bint Hamdan Al-Nahyan, Assistant to Chairman of the RCA for Women Affairs, with the over-arching goal of addressing maternal and neonatal health in disadvantaged communities throughout the world. Sheikha Shamsa has a longstanding committment to women's causes and believes that "no woman should die while bringing new life into the world or suffer needlessly for the rest of her life due to a lack of appropriate medical care". WAHA strives to be an important international player in terms of implementing and funding a wide range of activities that promote women's health in settings where the needs are greatest, and in advocating for greater action to be taken to reduce maternal deaths.
