Somalia: U.S. welcomes appointment of new transitional prime minister.

The United States Government welcomes the appointment of the new transitional Prime Minister of Somalia, Dr. Abdiweli Mohamed Ali. We are encouraged at the speed with which the Transitional Federal Government President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed made this appointment. The United States looks forward to working with Dr. Abdiweli in the days ahead in support of both the Djibouti Peace Process and the completion of the transitional tasks. The United States calls for the quick endorsement of the Prime Minister and new cabinet by the Transitional Federal Parliament.

 

The United States also reiterates the urgent need, as called for in the Kampala Accord and by the United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary General for Somalia, to agree on critical benchmarks and timelines for the coming 12 months. These should include the completion of the draft constitution, greater fiscal transparency, and reforming the Transitional Federal Parliament and other institutions.

 

We also urge continued reform of the security institutions, maintenance of the recent military gains against al-Shabaab, political outreach and reconciliation efforts, and elections before August 2012. Per the Accord, we look forward to the Somali consultative meeting, which we hope will be held before the end of July, and which should include all relevant political actors including Somaliland, Puntland, Galmuduug, and Ahlu Sunna Wal Jama’a (ASWJ).

 

In addition to this meeting, we continue to urge the TFG to hold more consistent consultations with the Somali regions, ASWJ, and the broader civil society.
