SOMALIA: New Prime Minister of Somalia

The President of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG), H.E. Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has appointed Dr. Abdiweli Mohamed Ali to the post of the prime minister of the government.

 

Professor Ali brings a breadth of experience to the job. He was a deputy prime minister and minister for planning and international cooperation. He also consulted extensively for international organizations.

 

Prior to joining the TFG, Dr. Ali was a professor of economics at Niagra University in Buffalo, New York. Dr. Ali joined the faculty in August 2003. He has a Master of Public Administration from Harvard University, a Certificate of Taxation from Harvard Law School, and a Master of Economics from Vanderbilt University. Dr. Ali completed his Ph.D. in Economics at George Mason University. In 1998 and 1999, Dr. Ali was a Joel Leff Fellow of Political Economy at Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University. Before coming to Niagara, Dr. Ali was a Research and Forecast Manager for the Commonwealth of Virginia.

 

Dr. Ali’s primary research and teaching interests include economic growth and development, international trade, public finance and public choice. His current research focuses on the effect of institutions on economic growth. One of his articles “Political stability, stable economic policies and growth: An empirical investigation” was published in that Atlantic Economic Journal on March 2001, and won the Best Article Award for the year 2001. He has publications in numerous peer reviewed journals including Atlantic Economic Journal, International Advances in Economic Research, Journal of Public Choice and Public Finance, and the Journal of Business and Economics Research.

 

He is a member of the American Economic Association, Southern Economic Association, and the International Atlantic Economic Society. Dr. Ali did consulting work for international institutions including the World Bank and the United Nations Development Program.

 

Professor Ali is expected to consult with members of parliament and clan elders as he embarks on forming his cabinet over the next few weeks.

Diaspora scholar named Somali Prime Minister

 

Professor Abdiweli Mohamed Ali has been confirmed as the new Prime Minister of the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia.

 

President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed announced the appointment of the diaspora scholar at Villa Somalia, the state house in Mogadishu, Thursday.

Prof Ali has been occupying the post in an acting capacity since June 19 resignation of Mr Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed alias Farmajo.

 

Mr Mohammed resigned following the Kampala Accord that was reached between President Sharif and the Speaker of the Parliament, Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden on June 9.

 

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni oversaw the Kampala talks.

 

If Prof Ali is endorsed by parliament, his government may bring to an end a constitutional crisis that has troubled TFG for over a year.

 

The Speaker of parliament remains aggressively in favour of three years term extension for the legislature, while President Sharif and former PM preferred a one-year extension for all the transitional federal institutions.

 

A Harvard graduate and Professor of Economics at Niagara university in New York, the new PM lived and taught in the US. He served as the minister of Planning and International Cooperation cum deputy PM in the last government.

 

Prof Ali is the second diaspora to lead a Somali government.

 

The latest crisis within the TFG started following a misunderstanding between President Sharif and the leader of the semi-autonomous state of Puntland, Mr Abdurahman Mohamed Farole.

 

The new PM, who hails from Puntland, is therefore expected to forge closer collaboration between the leaders in Mogadishu and those in Puntland and other mini-states like Galmudug in Central Somalia.

This Somali man after all graduate from John Kennedy School of Government at Harvard, and George Mason University earning his PHD in Economics with emphasis on development. But hey these things don’t matter, what matters is Narnia and the Anthropologists who was sacked from Sharif Ahmed.

Zack, I don't think people write date and place of birth on their resume, or do they? Age discrepancies were due part on the Somali website that reported his biography(unauthorized anyway) and that's my take. His CV looks tight, but how he's going work with the likes of Sakin and Shareef is a matter all are waiting to witness.

^^^I always liked Abdiweli. Poor sack you do know the man was the founder of the PDF, or Puntland Diaspora Forum and has been known to many of us for years. He is a good man who has helped his region and is capable of bringing good change. Hence its strightforward, but your attack was expected.

Zack, I don't know when the dude was born, i was only pointing out that there is no date of birth in that resume of his. I guess it was the Somali website that printed his date of birth and place of birth. Why should we care when he was born anyway?
