Xaaji Xunjuf Posted June 7, 2011 Ibrahim Ahmed(an ethnic Somalilander) won 2 years ago the elections for MP in Kamukunji(Eastleigh district of Nairobi). But his opponent stole the votes. Ahmed succesfully went to court and his opponent did not get elected and withdrew. Now soon there will be an re-election in Kamukunji district, which Ibrahim is leading. this would mean, that it's the first time a Somali speaking person gets elected outside of NFD area. Xaaji Xunjuf Posted June 7, 2011 The independence of the Judiciary came under scrutiny following the decision by the High Court to halt Monday Kamukunji constituency by-election. The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has condemned the last-minute cancellation of the by-election saying it reads political mischief in the ruling and now wants the Bill to vet judge’s fast tracked. Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi led the party in condemning the ruling. "To organise a by-election in one constituency costs the public about Sh50 million. The Interim Independent Electoral Commission (IIEC) has already printed ballot papers and the candidates have been on campaign trail," Mudavadi told the Press at Orange House yesterday. "This should mean three days before the election IIEC has already spent about the same amount or more. It is therefore not in the interest of the public to stop the process." Lots of resources Mudavadi wondered why ruling on the matter, which had been in court all along on, was entered yesterday, two weekend days before by the election. "There is no Chief Justice to give direction on the matter. A ruling delivered on a Friday when people are preparing to vote on Monday beats logic," he said. Mudavadi, who is also the Minister for Local Government said, the ruling was a major setback for the candidates especially ODM’s Ibrahim Ahmed, whom he said had spent a lot of resources campaigning and during the petition which he won against former MP Simon Mbugua. "Who will compensate the IIEC and the candidates?" Asked Mudavadi. ODM MPs called for a quick surgery of the Judiciary, which it described as rotten and does not listen to the wishes of Kenyans. Ahmed, who was also present during the press conference, said the court ruling would not distract him as it is meant to disorient him. Not to waver "As you are aware, we have been fighting for this seat for a long time. We will continue campaigning no matter how long it takes," Ahmed, who was accompanied by his supporters, said. He asked Kamukunji voters to be patient as the matter is being resolved and urged them not to waver in their support. ODM’s Kasarani, MP Elizabeth Ongoro, said ODM opponents were using unorthodox means to deny ODM its victory. "It was clear that our candidate was going to win this election, but our opponents have decided to use the courts to frustrate us." Nairobi Mayor George Aladwa said the Kamukunji ODM supporters would not be put off by the new turn of events, saying Mr Ahmed was their preferred choice for MP. "Kenyans are watching and that it is high time the spirit of the new Constitution guided all organs of the Government," Aladwa said.

STOIC Posted June 7, 2011 I want to bring the supporters of "ethnic Somalilanders" little bit back to the ground. The election is NOT over yet and the game is still on...Your "ethnic Somalilanders" folks are minority. I doubt they will like to separate themselves from the rest of the Somalis in Kenya..... There are many impressive cats from NFD making progress in Kenyan political landscape. The likes of Ahmednassir, Ahmed Hassan Issack, and Abdikadir Hussein ... Che -Guevara Posted June 8, 2011 ^Don't be party booper-Suge Knight made good progress. I guess all that campaigning and loudspeakers blazing in Islii paid off.
STOIC Posted June 8, 2011 ^I was just trying to bring them a bit down before they celebrate too soon...If he wins this will be no doubt the first time "ethnic Somalilander" wins a seat in Kenya (though they been here generations back)..Now there is the heavy political machine of the likes of Yusuf Haji campaigning for the other candidates (A fair campaign, but as usual sullied with tribalism within somalis)..I think it is wise for the Somalilanders to hold their hoses till he wins after all there are other "none-ehtnic Somalilanders" campaigning for Johny....
