Liqaye Posted May 21, 2011 Somali government forces have seized the Kudhaa Island, a strategic militant hideout in southern Somalia following a fierce battle that lasted for nearly an hour on Friday afternoon clearpxl Somali government army officer, Mohamed Hassan Bule, told the media in Kudhaa on Saturday morning said that the Island is currently under the control of Somali government, adding that the militants retreated toward Kismayo, the provincial capital of the Lower Jubba region. “We have killed 8 militants and seized armed vehicles and ammunitions from them—now the Island is secure and we are calling on those who fled from here to return to their homes” the Somali army official told the media on Saturday. The island of Kudhaa, located about 130 kilometers south of the key port town of Kismayo was the main Islamist hideout in Somalia where most of the foreign fighters in the country were landed. The Island was also the biggest training base for Al-Qaeda fighters in Somalia.
