UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Kenya's Amina Mohamed, as assistant secretary-general and deputy executive director of the UN Environment Program (UNEP).

In a statement issued on Friday, Ban said Mohamed will succeed Angela Cropper of Trinidad and Tobago, to whom the secretary-general is grateful for her outstanding contribution and exceptional service to UNEP in the deputy executive director post.

"Mohamed brings a wealth of experience to this position at the national and international level as a distinguished diplomat, lawyer, manager and policymaker working across the sustainable development and environment policy agendas.

"Among many important roles, Mohamed will be responsible for further advancing the UNEP Medium Term Strategy and related reform agenda, as well as strengthen UNEP's political and substantive input to the UN Conference on Sustainable Development 2012 and beyond," the statement said.

From 2000 to 2006, Mohamed was the ambassador and permanent representative of Kenya to the UN in Geneva.

Her many achievements included being the first woman to chair the General Council of the World Trade Organization, and the first African and first woman to be elected chair of the council for the International Organization for Migration.

Since 2008, Mohamed has been the permanent secretary and chief executive officer of the Ministry of Justice, National Cohesion and Constitutional Affairs of the Republic of Kenya where her leadership played a key role in the political, legal and constitutional reform process.

Born on Oct. 5, 1961, Mohamed graduated with a LLM in International Law from Kiev State University, and has also undertaken post graduate studies at University of Oxford and the Kenya School of Law.

Good for Her! Congratulations Amina.......your doing us Somalis proud.

Now if she isnt slave of the Western world she can help her people back in NFD and enlighten the world about Ogadien struggle instead or if she is a slave she will probably side with Ethiopia and Kenya against Somalis.

Somalis in Kenya have entered into the top levels of the Kenyan govt such as this lady and Farah Macalin etc. I was even reading an article about a Somali Havard grad who was thinking about running for presient there not too long ago. To say Somalis in Kenya face the same occupation as those in Ethiopia is laughable. If they want to join Somalia that is their decision nobody elses.

NFD Somalis suffered just like those Somalis in Kilinka 5aad i.e Waggala Massacre and many more. I suggest you visit NFD and see the difference to the rest of Kenya in terms of development. Their dream of joining Somalia has being affected by the 1991 civil war in Somalia. That doesn't mean they are against joining Somalia. Just like in Kilinka 5aad they have their local federal government, but the Somalis there also aren't against joining Somalia. It's just the civil war in Somalia has also affected their dream. By the way, lets not ruin this thread regarding sister Amina's achievments.

The NFD and Ogadien better join forces and free themselves from occupation and when Somalia is stable again which will happen fast if USA doesnt revive Kenya and Ethiopia like the Russians did in 1991 to Ethiopia, then they have no choice but to support a Somali country.

Somalis dominate Kenyan economy, lets destroy the Kenyans aswell, declare Nairobi the capital of a the new "South Somalia a.k.a NFD". Somalis turn the table and we will occupy the Bantus this time.

Soomaali naceyb baa intaas kaa geysatay. Diid ama nac, the fact is Muqdisho Soomaali ayaa gacmahooda ku dhisatay, kuna burburiye, haddana ku dhisan karo, but Nayroobi Soomaali ab iyo isir mid ee ku leedahay maleh, iyadana ma dhisan. So your comparison is misplaced. Reer NFDna do have more historical connection to Muqdisho than to Nayroobi -- waa isir ahaan, waa dad ahaan, waa diin ahaan, waa dhaqan ahaan, waa dhul ahaan...

Ma garatay mise casharka waaku celinaa?

Soomaaliweyn ha waarto, wixii naceybna hanoo dhaafaan. They are very welcome to leave Soomaalinimada ku sheegooda.
