Somalina Posted May 13, 2011 British Office Somalia Upper Hill Road PO Box 30465-00100 Communications Section Telephone: (254) (0) 20 2844 000 Direct dial: (254) (0) 20 2844 292 www.ukinkenya.fco.gov.uk 11 May 2011 “The British Foreign Secretary, William Hague, today announced his intention to reopen a British Embassy in Somalia as soon as local conditions permit. “The Foreign Secretary’s announcement reflects the strategic importance of Somalia for regional stability and the fight against terrorism and piracy. It also reflects the United Kingdom’s commitment to support the development of a stable and secure country for the people of Somalia. “Over the last 12 months, the UK Government has significantly increased its engagement with Somalia. In May 2010 a UK Senior Representative for Somalia was appointed. In February 2011 the British International Development Secretary, Andrew Mitchell, announced a tripling of aid to Somalia. The UK has established a British Office for Somalia based in the British High Commission, Nairobi. This Office coordinates the work of over 30 staff from the UK’s Department for International Development, Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Stabilisation Unit and Ministry of Defence. “The establishment of a British Embassy is the next logical step in intensifying our efforts to help bring peace and stability to Somalia, but due to the complex political and security situation there will need to be significant improvements before an Embassy can reopen. The British Office for Somalia will continue to lead on the UK’s engagement with Somalia until conditions allow for the establishment of the Embassy.” For further details on this please contact Abdilatif Maalim, Mobile No; +254723040125 Telephone; +254202844292 Emai:l Abdlatif.Maalim@fco.gov.uk
