Somalina Posted April 21, 2011 The girlfriend of acclaimed British photographer and film-maker Tim Hetherington, killed by forces loyal to Colonel Gadaffi in Libya, said today she was "devastated" by his death. Targeted: Tim Hetherington and US photographer Chris Hondros died in a rocket-propelled grenade attack in Misrata The Oscar-nominated war photographer, who won world press photographer of the year four times, died along with American photographer Chris Hondros after apparently being deliberately targeted during fighting yesterday in the city of Misrata. Mr Hetherington suffered massive blood loss before reaching hospital, while Mr Hondros died late last night from his injuries. Both men were 41. Mr Hetherington's family said they were told he had been killed by a rocket-propelled grenade. His girlfriend, Somali-American film-maker and actress Idil Ibrahim - who nicknamed him the "Timinator" - wrote on Facebook that she was "absolutely devastated", later adding on Twitter: "Rest in peace Timinator. I love you." Friends said today the couple, who lived in New York after Mr Hetherington moved there from Hackney, were planning to start a family. On a blog post, film-maker Sebastian Doggart wrote: "His death is made sadder because of the personal happiness he had found with his girlfriend." Thousands of people have paid tribute to Mr Hetherington online, hailing him as a "hero", while his family spoke of their "great sadness" and said: "He will be forever missed." Ms Ibrahim set up New York-based production company Zeila Films in 2008, where Mr Hetherington also worked as director of photography. The couple recently attended the Oscars together when Mr Hetherington's documentary Restrepo, about the war in Afghanistan, was nominated for best documentary. Born in Liverpool, Oxford-educated Mr Hetherington studied photojournalism at Cardiff University. A big supporter of humanitarian causes, he began his photography career at the Big Issue in London in 1997, before working in West Africa for eight years. At the time of his death, he was working for the Panos news agency, and to gather material for a multimedia project to expose the humanitarian cost of the conflict in Libya. He is understood to be the first Briton to be killed there since the violence began two months ago, and the first Western journalist to be killed covering the events. Speaking of his work recently, he said: "My main objective is to take audiences to a faraway place that they could never travel to without the help of an intrepid film-maker. This is the challenge that still excites me." Co-director of Restrepo, Sebastian Junger, said: "Tim was one of the most courageous and principled journalists I have ever known." Chimera Posted April 22, 2011 Condolences to Idil, and the family. Axmed-ina-jaad/mr part time porn director, part time pimp, Idil is a self-made woman, if the likes of you actually upped your game that would eventually lead you to star-crowded red carpets at the Oscars & Golden Globes, you might have been picked up on her love-radar, and this tragic heartbreak could have been prevented.(not likely in your case) Instead you and your likes don't make the effort, but insult, mock [or worse] ignore the talented Somalis that have major aspirations to become directors, actors and actresses, and blackmail them with religion, culture, etc. When these talented individuals then make it big, and naturally fall in love with people that are similarly talented individuals but from other backgrounds they suddenly become "sell outs"? You can't be a sell-out to someone or something that never embraced you in the first place!
Somalina Posted April 22, 2011 Well said Chimera. It is best if you ignore that troll.
Chimera Posted April 22, 2011 I would love to ignore and dismiss him as a mere troll, but sadly his sentiments are held by a significant section of our community, very misygonistic in nature, but they are dying breed, atleast in the west. They will embrace Mo Farah and his Mixed-race wife, or Raage Omaar and his Scottish Baroness, but woe if a supermodel or female director does the same, no then they must be dubbed gaalo raac. SOL is the most respected Somali forum, and no doubt Idil is a member or lurks the forum occasionally. Therefore I can't allow a hate-filled character like Axmed hi-jack the spirit of this site with his sick attack, someone has to highlight the hypocrasy and counter such venom. Archdemos Posted April 22, 2011 i was reading this yesterday on the tube. Very sad case indeed. RIP Tim and Chris. Restrepo is one of the best docs i've ever seen. Here is a powerful scene from it. It highlights the sheer lunacy that is war best. LOL @ Chimera. You finally lost your rag with the most bizarre character on SOL. Just ignore his sexual innuendos, he’ll soon get bored and go back to one of the other sites. Oddly enough i do miss Cowke, Peacenow and Mr Somalia. Ok maybe not Mr Somalia:D

I would not call a supermodel oo qaawan or tv actress 'talented', there is no talent in taking your clothes off and showing your cawrah to millions. but i guess, you and i have a different perspective when it comes to talent. I suppose by your logic that turkish woman who became the first muslim woman to be on the cover of playboy is "talented". lol
