Somali man, nabbed by FBI and military last week, charged as pirate negotiator

Recommended Posts

Federal authorities in Virginia have charged a Somali man with being the chief negotiator for pirates who shot and killed four Americans aboard their yacht in February, The Virginian-Pilot reports.

Mohammad Saaili Shibin, 50, was hunted down and arrested last week inside Somalia by FBI agents and the U.S. military.

His capture and initial court appearance were kept secret until Wednesday when the indictment was unsealed in Norfolk, Va., the newspaper reports.

The four Americans, from Los Angeles and Seattle, were shot and killed by pirates about their yacht Quest off Africa , as the Navy tried to negotiate their release, according to the federal government.

The indictment says Shibin researched the four Americans on the Internet to determine how much of a ransom to seek and to identify family members they should contact, The Associated Press reports.
