Liqaye Posted April 13, 2011 Demonstrators from the Student Movement to Free Indonesia Crewmen held a rally in front of the Somalia Embassy on Jl. Salak, South Jakarta, on Wednesday. The coordinator for the rally, Hamid Souwakil, said Somali pirates had acted in an inhumane manner and had blackmailed the Indonesian government following the kidnapping of 20 crew members of the MV Sinar Kudus. The crew have been held hostage since March by Somali pirates. The pirates have demanded a ransom of at least US$3 million. “This was obvious when the Somalis kept asking for a fee, even though the Indonesian government wants to solve this peacefully,” Hamid said, as reported by tribunnews.com. He added that the Somali government should play a more active role in helping Indonesia free the ship’s crew. The Indonesian government and owner of the ship, PT Samudra Indonesia, have organized negotiations with the pirates.
