A nine-member delegation led by the head of the U.N. World Food Program (WFP), Ms. Josetta Sheeran, arrived in the Puntland capital of Garowe on Monday.

 

The delegation was welcomed at Garowe International Airport by senior government officials, including Puntland Interior Minister Gen. Abdullahi Jama (Ilkajir) and Security Minister Gen. Yusuf Ahmed Kheir.

 

The delegation was ushered to the State House where the WFP chief met with the President of Puntland, H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Mohamud (Farole), and other members of the government.

 

Discussions included WFP food aid to Somalia and Puntland particularly, working relations between the government and WFP, acceleration of the Bossaso Port rehabilitation project including drenching, and the relocation of WFP offices from Nairobi to Somalia, and particularly stable regions like Puntland.

 

President Farole and WFP chief Ms. Sheeran held a joint press release after the meeting, expressing their pleasure to have an engagement and dialogue over WFP role in Puntland.

 

Ms. Sheeran promised to consider all the issues discussed with the Puntland Government and said she was delighted for her visit to Puntland, which is the first time she has traveled to Somalia.
