Meeting of AU, ECA finance ministers opens in Addis Ababa News - Africa news

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles Zenawi Monday expressed regret that Africa has not developed as expected, despite recent increase in investment and economic growth. Speaking in Addis Ababa, at the 4th annual joint meeting of the Conference of Ministers of Economy and Finance of the African Union (AU) and the Conference of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), the premier urged African countries to eliminate all obstacles to development. The meeting, being held under the theme 'managing development in Africa', is also being attended by the Ministers of Environment and Health, partner institutions and central bank governors.

 

It is expected to examine the role of the state in development, as well as define an appropriate interventions to strengthen the role of the state and other actors in carrying out critical tasks necessary to ensure economic transformation in Africa.

 

The two-day meeting will also allow policy makers to examine the role played by the state in Africa in promoting development, exchanging best practices and lessons learned in Africa and elsewhere on the challenges of building a competent and dynamic state that promotes development.

 

It will also recommend concrete measures for an efficient management of development as well as the promotion of economic transformation in Africa.
