Af Soomaali 101

Recommended Posts

Okay, I'll cut to the chase. Af Soomaaliga xooga wu igu adag yahay. I can carry a conversation here and there but I slip in a few English words. Don't get me started on elders. They want you to improve your Somali skills yet they nit pick waxad tiraahdid and leave a bad taste in your mouth. So much for motivation huh?

Halkan waxa waye where positive folks assist me or others like me in defining words-yada nugu cusub and other grammatical questions. First question...

Which one has a grammatical error:

1. Af Soomaaliga hodan ban
KA
ahay or...

2. Af Soomaaliga hodan ban
KU
ahay

I understand ka is from and ku is to but which one makes more sense? Had a debate with a friend about this. Feedback please. Reasons would be appreciated as well :). Gracias.

PS: There is no grammar in Somali - anything goes. Markaa, sidaad doonto ugu hadal.

^What? No grammar? Don't tell me all those garaac in grade school was for nothing.

Vans: None of them is correct. Here's the correct way of saying.

1. Af Soomaaliga hodan ma KA ahi or you can say

2. Af Soomaaliga hodan KU ma ahi.

Your KA and KU are alright. You just had to add few letters before/after to make a good sense. Af-Soomaaliga in that way it's unique. You may say yesterday's date was labaatan iyo koow or koow iyo labaatan, both mean the same.

'Ana yaa ustaad' ayaan odhan jirey in grade school (my early schooling was in carabi). Jokes aside, I don't follow any grammatical rules in my spoken or written Somali (except for the masculine/feminine rule of course), however, I do believe I speak and write with perfect grammar. Weird.

So the KA in that sentence is a negation and the KU is an affirmation?

Question will be written in red from now on iA.

What the heck is maaweylo?

What are the difference between baan/aan and aa/baa?

Val, it's not weird, for most native speakers garmmar is learned naturally as they acquire language in a linguistically rich environment.

Vans.

wordska- ereyada.

Both sentences are correct and although the meaning is essentially the same, the emphasis differs slightly.

Af Soomaaliga hodan baan ku ahay- I am fluent in Somaali.

Af Soomaaliga hodan baan ka ahay - My Somali is fluent.

Hodan - lit meaning is rich.
