Somaliland to Get its Citizens Out of Libya – MFA statement

Recommended Posts

HARGEISA — The Somaliland government said it was launching efforts to rescue several hundred Somalilanders stranded in Libya on Sunday.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the government in collaboration with local and international organizations including International Organization for Migration (IOM) are planning to evacuate citizens from Libya.

They did not provide further details or the exact number of Somalilanders stranded in Libya but sources inside Somaliland believe at least 200 Somalilanders are in Libya.

Ever since anti-government mass protests began in Libya, a number of countries have been scrambling their citizens by air and sea operations.

Many sub-Sahara Africans who became stranded have been mistaken as being mercenaries by rebels and their supporters and as a result came under attack, many were beaten up, detained or killed.

Somaliland is not a recognized state and its resources are very limited but it said it is currently making efforts to repatriate all its citizens from the North African nation.

The statement encouraged Somalilanders in Libya and their relatives to contact the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the following:

Fahmi Qasim Mohamed: Fqasim@somalilandforeign.net Tel: (2522) 442492

African Own I have no idea what you are talking about because you are from Somalia!!!

Anyways, the story is is ridiculous. Just because numerous western countries made announcments about getting their citizens out, doesn't mean your enclave needs to make up the same announcment almost a month later. Is it a way to get media attention?

When the rebels started advancing almost a month ago the news of sub-saharan Africans believed to be working for Qaddaffi were being attacked and killed, was all over the news, but its only yesterday when Qaddaffi has turned the tide that your enclave is annoucing they are getting it's "citizens out." Lol!

Slanders and Somalis are pathetic. We have become a disgrace. One country is -10 the other is -2, and the -2 country is acting all high and mighty because they are better then the -10 country. Truth is you wouldn't post this on any other Forum because you would be laughed at so you come here to the Quxooti forums to laugh at somalis. How sad. You can't even post this on a Djiboutian forum/

Arab League to evacuate Somali refugees from Libya to Sudan

AHN - March 07

With the situation in Libya worsening as fighting between the government and rebels intensifies, the transitional federal government of Somalia announced the Arab League has agreed to evacuate Somali refugees stranded in Libya.

In a press conference held in Mogadishu Sunday evening, Abdiwali Mohammed Ali, the minister of planning and international cooperation for Somalia, said the nations of the Arab League has accepted to undertake evacuation of Somali refugees from Libya to neighboring Sudan.

Ali called for Somalis in Libya to go to the offices of the Arab League to register to be removed from the country. The official didn't specify the time of evacuation.

He said that an estimated 2,100 refugees from Somalis are now in Libya.

The Somali minister warned the Libyan government and its people against taking the same road that has plunged Somalia into lawlessness and clan warfare, calling for them to solve the crisis while there is yet time.

The statement comes three days after hundreds of Somali refugees took refuge at Somalia’s embassy in Tripoli after they were forced by landlords to vacate their homes.

Abdulkadir Ahmed Tusbah told Somali government-run Radio Mogadishu that refugees live in desperate condition, saying that Libyan citizens target them with gunfire or axes.

“We don’t where to run to save our lives from arbitrary murders other than the embassy building.” Tusbah lamented. “No food, no water… We can’t come out to seek and get what to live on.”

He said that at least five Somali refugees had been killed and dozens more hurt.

Foreigners in Libya are targeted by revolutionaries who believe them to be mercenaries brought in to prop up Muammar Gaddafi’s regime.

Tusbah also indicated that about 20 Somalis have reached Tunisia, crossing the border to escape the violence.

“We have no access to leave from this country as world nations have already started evacuating their nationals from troubled Libya,” he said, calling for the Somali transitional government and United Nations to help them evacuate. - All Headline News
