The Zack Posted April 7, 2011 Meles Lost Political Credibility AFP – ADDIS ABABA — Ethiopia is ready to help the people of Eritrea topple the regime of Issaias Afeworki, Prime Minister Meles Zenawi told lawmakers Tuesday, ruling out a military invasion. Meles accused the Eritrean government of trying to destabilise Ethiopia by backing rebel groups such as the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) and ****** National Liberation Front (ONLF) as well as the Somali Al Qaeda-affiliated Shebab. “We have to facilitate ways for Eritrean people to remove their dictatorial regime,” he told journalists. “We have no intention to jump into their country but we need to extend our influence there. If the Eritrean government tries to attack us, we will also respond.” The border war that pitted Eritrea against Ethiopia from 1998 to 2000 left some 80,000 dead. Despite a peace agreement signed in 2000 in Algiers, tension continues to run high between the two Horn of Africa neighbours. Meles also slammed what he said was the influence of the Egyptian government, which he accused of encouraging Eritrea to destabilise Ethiopia, in order to dissuade Ethiopia from developing the Nile. “Recently, Eritrea has been training and deploying Al Shebab and home-grown destructive forces to terrorize our country. But Egypt is the direct force behind these destructive elements,” he told lawmakers. He called on Egyptians to realize that Ethiopia is not their enemy, saying that Ethiopia’s plan to build a major dam on the Nile will also benefit the downstream countries. “We want the Egyptian people to realise that we do not want to hurt them,” he said. Ethiopia has plans to use Nile waters for agricultural projects. Egypt feels such projects would threaten its water supply.

Bashiir Posted April 13, 2011 Tuesday, 12 April 2011 12:15 NewBusinessEthiopia.com BY NEW BUSINESS ETHIOPIA REPORTER The new Human Right Report on Ethiopia launched this week by the United States Government State Department indicated that Ethiopian government has failed to implement its own constitution and several laws related to protecting human rights of its citizens. From restricting press freedom, blocking websites and allowing abuses of child as well as women rights, to disrespecting the right of citizens to change their government, Ethiopia’s laws that are written on paper are being violated by the government. During the year fighting between government forces, including local militias, and the ****** National Liberation Front (ONLF), an ethnically based, violent insurgent movement operating in the Somali region, resulted in continued allegations ofhuman rights abuses by all parties to the conflict. Security forces generally reported to civilian authorities; however, there were instances in which security forces, specifically special police and local militias, acted independently of civilian control. Human rights abuses reported during the year included unlawful killings, torture, “The constitution and law provide citizens the right to change their government peacefully. In practice the country has never had a peaceful change of government, and the ruling EPRDF and its allies dominated the government,” the 2010 Country Reports on Human Rights Practices noted. The report also stated that the Ethiopian government has been restricting political participation through bureaucratic obstacles and government and ruling party intimidation, harassment, and arrests. Discrimination, societal abuses, and trafficking in persons and freedom of association are also being violated in Ethiopia, according to the report. “Although the law provides for freedom of association and the right to engage in unrestricted peaceful political activity, the government limited this right in practice.” The report also noted that police and judicial corruption continued to be problems in Ethiopia while freedom of assembly is also not implemented in most cases. “Multiple opposition political parties reported EPRDF partisans with cameras at the entryway of campaign rallies who would film opposition activists while they were entering, leaving, or participating in meetings. After a meeting the individuals pictured reportedly were harassed and intimidated to discontinue their support for the opposition party; sometimes they were detained.” Arbitrary interference with privacy, family, home, or correspondence is also witnessed in the past few years as part of violating the national laws and constitutions of the country, according to US State Department Report. The UN Committee Against Torture noted in a November 19 report that it was"deeply concerned" about "numerous, ongoing, and consistent allegations" concerning "the routine use of torture" by the police, prison officers and other members of the security forces--as well as the military, in particular--against political dissidents and opposition party members, students, alleged terrorists, and alleged supporters of insurgent groups, such as the ONLF and the Oromo Liberation Front (OLF). The committee reported that such acts frequently occurred with the participation of, at the instigation of, or with the consent of commanding officers in police stations, detention centers, federal prisons, military bases, and unofficial or secret places of detention.
