Somalina Posted February 16, 2011 Somalia: Puntland, Galmudug State to Discuss Security Related Issues Garowe — As the security situation in the areas under the control of Somalia's semi-autonomous state of Puntland and self styled administration of Galmudug state are to meet today on security issues in Garowe town, the capital of Puntland administration, reports said on Wednesday. Abdidamad Nur Guled, the vice president of Galmudug state and Abdurrahman Mohamoud Farole the president of Puntland are said to focus on how to curb the rampant insecurity that increased in the territories run by the two administrations during their meeting in Garowe. Clan warfare and assassinations against the officials of both authorities would also be mooted in Garowe meeting. Galmudug and Puntland are to talk about how they together assure the tranquility of their territories. The meeting, which is said the first of its kind, is crucial the cooperation of the two authorities. Galka'yo is town that joins Puntland and Galmudug state as it became a place where repeated planned killings and expositions are routine in the last few months. Somalina Posted March 30, 2011 Galmudug President to Galkayo University Students: Teach the public about the dangr of illegal fire arms Hiiraan Online Staff Tuesday, March 29, 2011 The Galmudug State President, Mohamed Ahmed Alin, has called on university of Galkayo students to share their time between studying and informing the public, especially young freelance gunmen, about the danger of the use of illegal firearms to rob civilians in the crime prone Southern Galkayo District of Gomudug State of Somalia. Mr Alin was speaking at a ceremony at the University of Galkayo in which he presented 25 computer machines to the management of the of the university. '' You are required to warn your fellow young men who rob people at gunpoint against the danger of leading such a criminal life and advise them to stop mounting illegal check points on the roads where they hurt their fellow Somali country men and women'', Mr. Alin told the students who gathered at the university of Galkayo hall. The president also thanked the students and management of the University of Galkayo for their emergency humanitarian assistance to the people affected by the severe drought in the areas under his administration. The ceremony was attended by Galmudug State ministers, scholars, prominent members of the public chief among them General Abdirahman Warsame Ilmi ( Caare) and ordinary people in Southern Galkayo. The Vice Chancellor of the University,Prof. Abdikadir Mohamed Shirwa , gave a long speech detailing university education programs for the needs of the local people. '' The University of Galkayo consists of several faculties including the faculty of medicine, the faculty of education, the faculty of Information Technology,the college of quality of education Control and the college of linguistics. There are over 166 students at the university, currently studying at the different faculties in the morning, noon and evening learning sessions'', said Prof.Shirwa. The Dean of the University of Galkayo has, on his part, said that the university is affiliated with local and international universities and colleges,for example the GENCO university in neighbouring Kenya. Somalina Posted April 2, 2011 Public Campaign Against Illega Militia Checkpoints kicks off in GalMudug Hiiraan Online Staff Saturday, April 02, 2011 A public campaign against illegal checkpoints by freelance gunmen on the Galkayo -Galinsor Road has begun in Southern Galkayo, the capital of Galmudug Region of Somalia. The campaign, which was organized by members across the social spectrum including Galmudug students,youth groups,the clergy,women groups, scholars and the Galmudug Business Communtiy, is intended to eradicate the menace of gun-totting and trigger happy freelance gunmen who man illegal checkpoints at which they rob people using the road connecting Galkayo with Galinsoor. Galmudug leaders have succeeded to dismantle several illegal checkpoints in the past few days and this new campaign to root out the culture of extortion by young gunmen on the Galmudug roads seems to be gathering momentum and building on the progress already made in weening young freelance gunmen off the chance to rob passengers on vehicles plying between the towns in the region. Schools and colleges in Galmudug remain closed as students take part in the effort to clear the roads off bandits. Also, reports reaching Hiiraan Online news desk suggest there appears that young men in Galmudug are arming themselves and preparing to fight with the highway robbers in case they resist their public campaign and attack them. There has been a huge problem of banditry in Galmudug recently which paralyzed road travel and which forced motorists to use long rough roads through other regions in an attempt to avoid being robbed.Before the public campaign begun, vehicles confiscated by the gunmen manning the illegal checkpoints after they failed to pay money were a constant feature of the roads of this banditry prone area of Central Somalia. This made the price of essential commodities to go up sharply, prompting the public to take the law into their hands. Meanwhile, the row between the most senior leaders of Galmudug regional government and the members of the Galmudug local parliament has intensified, greatly disappointing the residents of the areas under the Galmudug Administration which may undermine the goals already accomplished.
