Indhoos Posted September 27, 2009 okey dokey...This is how mine goes... if x is number of birds on the tree and y is # of birds under the tree then, when one bird from those on the tree joins those which are under, you may have this equation : x-1=y+1 ....equation I If one bird from under the tree joins those on the tree then you will also have second equation of: x+1 = 2(y-1) ....equation II According the equations we have... Two equations and two variables. Solving for x in the first one gives x=y+2, Now substituting the value of x in the next equation gives (y+2)+1=2(y-1) Solving for y in this equation will yield, y=5 and using this value of y to solve for x will give, x=7; therefore: there are 5 birds under the tree and 7 on the tree. If one of the seven comes down you will have an equal number of 6 and if one of the five goes up you will have 4 on the ground and 8 (double the num ont the ground) on the tree....very cool...
