Wi-Fi under attack!

Some people in NYC and othere big cities that had highspeed internet started setting up wireless LANs and letting anyone in the area that had a wireless NIC connect to there network and use there highspeed internet.

 

This is very easy to do, all the user has to do is set his/her wireless NIC on DHCP and they are set.

 

Now AT&T and Time Warner are telling customer to stop letting others use there connection or they will cut off their service.

The major security issue for Wi-Fi is the RF side of it. That any1 with the right equipment can sniff out data-transmission on the immediate premises.

Its not as easy as it sounds, there is access control, and security protocols that are to be complied before some-one is permitted into the network. Mind you that there is, free access points (public access points?) that any1 can connect to; and then there is private access points that are highly secure, and impenetrable.

I am referring to situations where people want to allow others access. And in that case the only thing required from a client would be to be on DHCP.

If you're gonna let *every1* in, without prior security precautions. Then, u might as well be prepared for security breaches that happen well inside ya network.

Computer on the same network can share a connection without sharing any data. The only thing to worry about would be if someon is monitoring network traffic, and in that case you use cryptography, and if you are someone who would worried about people monitoring your network traffic you probebly would not let them connect to your network in the first place.
