Somalia: UN donates 11 police vehicles to Puntland

BOSSASO, Somalia May 29 (Garowe Online) - The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has donated police vehicles to the Somali self-governing State of Puntland to help improve the region’s policing capacity, Radio Garowe reports.

 

Puntland Security Minister Abdullahi Said Samatar was officially handed the keys to the 11 vehicles in the northern port city of Bossaso, with Puntland police commissioner Col. Muse “Joqrafi” Ahmed and other security officials present.

 

The 11 police vehicles include 10 Toyota pickup trucks and one transport vehicle, police officials said.

 

The donated vehicles will be shared among the seven regions and police divisions in Puntland State, including the UN-trained Special Protection Unit (SPU) that protects U.N. offices and foreign aid workers.

 

The U.N. has stepped up its aid to Puntland since the election of Dr. Abdirahman Mohamed "Farole" as Puntland's third president in January.
