Somali Islamists fight with northern enclave troops

MOGADISHU (Reuters) - Fighting flared on Monday between Somali Islamist forces and troops from the semi-autonomous northern enclave of Puntland which has resisted Islamist influence, Islamist sources said.

 

"Puntland troops attacked us 30 minutes ago in Galinsoor area," one of the Islamist sources told Reuters, referring to a town near the Puntland province border.

 

No more details were immediately available on what would be a dangerous turn of events in Somalia, which many fear is on the verge of war after the collapse of peace talks last week.

 

"We have no news of any casualties," the source said.

 

The Islamists took Mogadishu and a swathe of the south in June in direct challenge to the aspirations of the interim government of President Abdullahi Yusuf to restore central rule to the chaotic country for the first time in 15 years.

 

Puntland leaders have said they would resist any attempt by the Islamists to extend their control into the northern province. And Ethiopian troops are said by witnesses to be both bolstering the interim government in the town of Baidoa and entering Puntland to bolster its forces.

 

Galinsoor lies about 38 miles south of the Puntland border, while Baidoa is in southern Somalia.

The puntland administration is making big mistake.

 

I can't understand it, This how they want to end the success they achieved under peace to end.

 

MMI are not goin to attack Puntland they have adressed on all level . Icu has some influence in Puntland region but not to same extend of influence they have in kismayo and other places that they invaded therfor clearly they do not indend to go puntland region.

 

If the Puntland administration beleives by fighting the ICu it will help abdulahi yusuf , they are wrong becuase abdulahi is not just president for Puntland region is he ?.

 

Puntland must have independed agenda , One thats aside from the TFG and ICu , On agenda which tackles the people needs like health care , schools , and boosting the economy .

 

If Cade musa wants to have role in broader somali policts he can do it in postive way , For example by trying to bring Icu and tfg togather. Puntland amdininstrattion can play postive role in somali plotics today and they are needed to play neutrol ,

 

Indeed If they are neutrol between TFG and ICu then we would not need to go to other countries to hold peace talks , when we have a region thats in peace and neutrol in all the chao's thats happening in somalia.

This would have opend the doors for peace talks to take place within somalia , cities like Garow , Bossaso and etc, why not make history that will never be forgotten and hold peace talks in these cities and show the world we can slove our intern issue by ourself.

Big mistake? Oh please! This is someones land, their is no negotiating over it, regardless how tough you think they enemy is. These so-called courts have never seen a battle they are about to.

Lets fight for justice instead of qabiil. If we support justice then it will only create more justice. I am not saying that the ICU owns justice. If Puntland wants to fight the ICU then weapons and money alone won´t help it. Puntland has to change from within and gain the moral high ground otherwise its lost. Puntland will not fall because of outside pressure but it will crumble from within because its people are not satisfied.

When did all these non-puntlands become experts in our internal politics? If the Puntland Gov't didn't have it's people support it wouldn't have lasted a day. It is your so called courts that used violence to gain power. Right now, i'm hearing no battle took place involving Puntland soldiers. They are denying it.

Plus, Lol, we will see if Gaalkayo is like Kismayo and no bullets are fired.

Back to the topic, the courts must not derial the peace and stability that Pland has been enjoying. Direct military confrontation will only give more ammunitions to the likes of cadde.
