Nuune, you shouldn't compare a tiny Russia to the world's super power. You imply as if Russia and the former Soviets are interchangeable entities.

Georgie miscalculated and wa la tumay nimanki, they are begging for a ceasfire:

The Georgian foreign ministry on Sunday said Mikheil Saakashvili, Georgia's president, had signed an the order for Georgian forces to ceasefire.

Sources confirmed Russia had received notice of Georgia's ceasfire order.

quote:But the Russian Interfax news agency, said that Sergei Lavrov, Russia's foreign minister, had challenged the Georgian announcement, saying its troops were not observing the order.

Jonah Hull, Al Jazeera's correspondent in the Georgian town of Gori, described the announcement as an "extraordinary development" and a "virtual surrender" by Georgia.

Don't expect a ceasefire after blanket bombing a whole city. Russia will now get S Ossetia and no one will dare step in. They are simply taking an opportunity presented to them by Georgia's miscalculation.

I'm still unsure as to what the Russians' war aims are.

They say it's to protect the ones they've given Russian citizenship in South Ossetia and Abchazia. On the other hand, the Russian government didn't really seem to care about the Russian citizenship of the Muslim Chechens in Grozny.

It maybe that they want to achieve a sneaky annexation of those two provinces combined with a defeat of the Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili.

Perhaps it's also to thwart Georgian prospective membership of NATO and EU. Which is, of course, linked to Western energy security interests.

Getting those Central Asian energy resources to market bypassing Russian or Iranian influence is becoming really tricky for America. And I don't believe the US has the diplomatic clout anymore to rein in Moscow's ambitions. Putin has succeeded in making Russia, an assertive petrostate. I don't know what leverage the US can use now with its economy in the shitter and majority of its troops bogged down in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Poor Georgians will be left to fend for themselves.

Yeah I know it is getting worse by the hour, never heard of 2 hour ceasefire ever, heard something like that.

The USA is interfering as well, who would supply lots of millitary hardware to Georgia.

This would be Russia VS USA at the end, and it seems that way once the United States steps in

 All the U.S will do is call for ceaserfire and that is pretty much it. Niether The U.S or the EU will do much. Remember Russia is Nuclear armed nation therefore things aren't as simple as you might think.

ps. Georgia is way out of its league trying to fight Russia.

Russia has not brought any new technology in this war. This was an opportunity to shock and awe the West with new armory and what have you. But what we have seen so far is the use of old and aging aircrafts and artillery batteries. There wasn't any doubt that they will win the skirmishes hands down but in my view waa is ceebeeyeen.

Check this footage out (source). The Russian air attack misses its target by mitres. There is no precision guided missiles or anything like it. They are still using 30 year old technology first introduced in the MiG17.

Well actually they didnt need much of hi tech aresenal to defeat tiny Georgia. They may not have showcase much here, but their ground forces absulately crushed the American trained Georgians, who are well trained by the way.

Russia has captured city of Gori, which is merely KM away from the Georgian capital of Tblisi. Having already captured West(Georgia proper) as well as eastern Seperatist region of South Esontia, the Russians look to move to the Georgian capital of Tblisi. A regime change is what the Russians are aiming at this point according to the reports.

Cast your minds back to 2 years ago. Lebanon. Now compare the reactions of the 'international community' and how long the wars lasted.

They know that and that is why they don't want to bring their technologies out unless it is needed. If they can win the war with the WWII weapons they they'll use it.

Suldaan is missing the point that Russia has been on arms race with the United States

FYI, Just read this article, dated on Sep 12, 2007

Reuters

Aside from the NATO, the West (U.S in particular) has its eyes on the strategic Caspean Oil. In 2005, western MNCs built a long pipeline from Azerbijan that transports 800 millions of barrels of oil a day into the Turkish port of Ceyhan. Georgia is a conduit for this pipeline and hence its strategic significance for the west. However, France, Italy and Germany see Russia as a strategic partner, because Russia rightly uses its gas and oil supply as an instrument of foreign policy.
