unknown1 Posted August 24, 2008 Heavy fighting between the Union of Islamic Courts fighters and local clans kills at least 23 in the northern Afkala Haya region of Somalia. On Monday, militiamen loyal to the transitional federal governmen's former defense minister Barre Adan Shire Hiiraale, exchanged heavy fire with ICU forces in the Afkala Haya disctrict and at a check point leading to Afmadow killing 23 people. According to Press TV's correspondent in Somalia, Hiiraale has been forced to flee to the Gedo region and hundreds of Somalians are escaping the area where the violence took place and heading towards Afmadow. More than 79 civilians have been hospitalized in Afmadow following the outbreak of violence. Somalia is currently considered the most unstable country in the world and has suffered the effects of civil war for the last 30 years. The current infighting is largely between the transitional federal government and its allied Ethiopian troops in Somalia and the Islamic Courts Union.
