NGONGE

Date: five years from now

Location: Mogadishu city (or as the Mullahs shall rename it: Ardu-El-Khilaafa)

His Excellency Amir-el-Mo'mineen, Sheikh Aweys is sitting with his various advisors under an acacia tree and awaiting the arrival of two important messengers.

A green car that is escorted by armed young men on horses arrives. A lean, serious looking Somali young man gets out and approaches the Khalifa. He puts one hand on his chest and bows to the sitting Sheikh and his companions.

Messenger: Assalamu caleekom wa raxmatullahi wa barakato, O just Khalifa and saviour of the Somali people. May Allah shower his blessings on you and all that follow you and prolong your illustrious life so that you may rule over us for centuries to come.

Sheikh Aweys: Wa caleekom el salaam, akhi. Have a seat.

The young man is gratified and flattered by this friendly reply. He cautiously (and very respectively) sits down and carries on with his praises and eulogies of the conqueror of the Shabab, the destroyer of AMISOM, the thorn on the side of the Abyssinian empire, the fox of the horn, the lion of the south, the suspected Mehdi, the...

Sheikh Aw interrupts him and asks for news of Hargeisa.

Messenger: The city and its people are doing ok, thanks to your great leadership and wise management.

Sheikh Aw: What of the waali of Hargeisa? How is our brother, sheikh Indhacade, doing?

Messenger: He sends you his greetings and prayers and tells you that everything is as it should be. Thanks to Allah and your dependable guidance.

Sheikh Aw: Hmmm. What other news have you got for me?

Messenger: My Waali has instructed me to convey three messages to you, o Khalifa. The first is that, with me, he sent a young beautiful lady as a gift for you to add to your respected concubines. The second is a plea on behalf of Faysal Cali Waraabe (the Waali of Jowhar). It seems that Waali Waraabe has been missing his northern homeland and has asked my Wali to intercede and ask you to allow Wali Waraabe to relinquish the heavy chains of responsibility and return home as a private citizen!

Sheikh Aw: On the first matter, I want you to thank your Wali for his generosity and forethought; I shall treasure this gift as if she were one of my main wives. The second issue, as your Wali, the people here and you yourself know, is a thorny one. You all know that we have lost many good men in the civil war and that the few that allied themselves with me and remain alive today are the only ones I can trust. I fully understand Wali Waraabe’s quandary but I cannot, at this moment in time, give him what he is asking for. I need to find a replacement first.

Messenger: I understand, my lord, and shall convey your message back exactly how you said it.

Sheikh Aw: Hmmm. What was the third matter?

Messenger: This is a thorny one, my lord. The people of Growe are in open revolt and have been agitating for a fight for some time now.

Sheikh Aw: Ah! The people of Growe always agitate for a fight. What is it they want to revolt against this time?

Messenger: News has reached us that the local governor has insulted their tribal sensibilities by demanding that they produce five able young men every single day so that he can be carried around when he does his daily inspection of the town.

Sheikh Aw: May Allah save us from all tribal tendencies and rid us of anything that does not follow Allah's words and his prophet’s instructions.

Messenger: And your rule, my lord.

Sheikh Aw (chuckling): ...and my humble rule, my son, and my humble rule.

Messenger: Wali indhacade suggests the removal of this governer and the installation of a better man in his place.

Sheikh Aw: No. Riyaale shall remain in his place. He is the best man for Growe and her difficult folk. But, tell me, who does Wali indhacade have in mind?

Messenger: He humbly suggests, subject to your approval of course, that the job be given to Sheikh Hassan Adan Samatar.

Sheikh Aw: Ah! Sheikh Hassan indeed. But, no, I have a better job for our recently reformed Sheikh. Going to Growe might force him into a relapse and I would not want that on my conscience. I am sending him to Kismaayo instead. He has the right temprement for that volatile city. Now, tell me, what of the Ethiopians? Have they caused you any recent troubles?

Messenger: Not at all, my lord. They have been behaving themselves and paying their taxes on time. Furthermore, the Wali you put in Addis proved to be a shrewed and very dedicated man. Not a peep of dissent has been heard from that quarter of our Khilafa.

Sheikh Aw: Yes. Sheikh Cade Muse was always a people's man. I suppose when one spends years dealing with irate customers at petrol stations, managing a few Ethiopians will seem like kids' play.

Messenger: Indeed, my lord.

Sheikh Aw: Well, thank you for these massages. You can go and sit in that corner and have yourself as much tea and food as you need, after that long journey of yours.

Sheikh Aweys claps his hands and one of his guards comes running.

Sheikh Aw: Bring me Dahabshiil! But make sure that he is not in chains this time. I am going to use the gentle approach with him today......

On number one, Sharif survived but his government were reshuffled.

Two, Al Shabab made no great gains. HI even less so.

Three, the Xabash always sneak back. But not to save the TFG (yet).

Four, the crazy mullahs are showing signs of discord but no fight yet.

Five, not in a million years.

Six, not in a million years.
